Three Counties

Irish Setters

Judge Richard Bott

I would like to thank the officers and committee for this appointment which I very much enjoyed. Also the ring stewards kept everything flowing during the day. I had a student judge with me on the day who I felt benefitted from the experience and gave great feedback on the exhibits, my thanks go to the exhibitors who allowed him to go over their dogs.

I felt that there was a super atmosphere around the ring today, the weather was ideal and it appeared that the spectators were thoroughly enjoying their day, lots of laughter could be heard and this all added to my enjoyable day.

The quality I some classes was superb, limit bitch being the hardest class of the day to judge, many high quality exhibits in there and it all came down to performance and condition on the day.

One thing that I would say is that extra weight does not mean maturity, some exhibits were far too heavy and this only spoilt their outline. This is a breed that takes time to finish and mature, have patience.

Presentation was excellent and my hands were as clean when I finished as when I started, thank you all for taking the time and pride to present your dogs in such order.

1st: 6716 TURNER Miss J Brabrook Red Buttons Of Dazucutter

Mature 7 ½ month who was clean in outline and had pleasing proportions. Head developing with a soft expression, clean through the neck and good front assembly for his age. Depth to forechest and ribs well back, meaning his topline was held. Enough rear angulation and his balance was shown in profile movement. Needs to tighten in front a little and would prefer a little neater feet but this could come with age.

2nd: 6710 SKETCHLEY Mrs L Kerrimere Harrison

8 month old and giving a little away on maturity at this stage but is coming along in the right direction. Pleasing head and expression, still needs to break but not overdone in anyway which is nice to see. Clean outline, balanced angles both ends, although a little straight at this stage. Good body proportions with ribs well back and correct finish to croup. Moved well in profile, just needs to tighten as one would expect on the out and back.

1st: 6649 DANKS-KEMISH Miss O P Teleri Summertime Blues Avec Alolfrana (ai)

Such an eye catching youngster, super outline and stands over plenty of ground, clean and balanced with no exaggeration. Very appealing head and expression, with raised brow and dark eye. Neck flows neatly into shoulders and a good return of forearm. Topline gently slopes and a super finish to the croup. His angulation is very good both ends and this is seen in his effortless side gait. A very promising young man indeed. My pleasure to award him Best Puppy Dog but in the challenge for BP the tannoy unsettled him a little and he had to give way to his sister.

2nd: 6633 BUTLER-HOLLEY, Mrs P & HOLLEY Mr M R Teleri Summer Wine At Shandwick (ai)

Litter brother to one and many positive qualities. Not as forward at this stage as his brother and liked to give his handler a challenge. Again the most appealing of head and expressions, clean neck leading to well placed shoulders. Forechest developing well and ribs back to a firm loin. Not quite the finish of his brother at this stage. On the move his outline is lovely, on the stack it was a little more “im not doing this mum”. Covered the ground well and I’m sure he will have a bright future.

3rd: 6704 ROWBOTTOM Mr G & Mrs D Alchriset Here Comes The Sun

JD (6 Entries) Abs: 1

Difficult class to judge as there were so many varying shapes, sizes and stages of development. A good class for my student judge to observe.
1st: 6663 FITZMAURICE Mrs L Harreds Trooper

Won the class on type and overall balance. Masculine in head with a dark eye, eyes a shade round but maintained a soft expression. Good neck which led into well placed shoulders, depth to forechest and ribs sprung and back to a proportionate loin. Gentle slope to topline and appealing finish to the croup. Lovely quarters with well bent stifles. In good coat and condition. Moved well in profile but still needing to tighten a little in front action. Stands on good legs and feet.

2nd: 6711 STAFFORD, Mr R & CLAYTON Mr D Gwendariff Red Light Show Farnfield

Not the easiest of dogs to assess as he is rather and handful, his outline could be seen to advantage on the move and this was clean and balanced. Appealing head with good work, eyes could be a little softer. Lovely reach of neck, enough front angulation and bodying up well, although he was carrying a little excessive weight. Strong quarters which were used to advantage on the move. Super coat which was gleaming in the sunlight. Once he settled on the move you could see his free movement. Typical young Irish in temperament, full of fun and spirit, which just needs channelling a little.

This young dog has really come into his own and presents such a typical outline, clean and balanced with nothing overdone. Head is well proportioned with raised brown and good work, would prefer eyes a shade darker but there is still time for this to come. Strong clean neck of good length and fitting neatly into his shoulders, good return of forearm and depth to his chest. Ribs well back to a string loin, topline slopes gently and he has a good finish to the croups and tail set. Developed quarters with muscular second thigh. In good coat and hard condition, just a tad too much weight today. He flows in profile movement covering the ground well with a driving action, still needing to tighten a little in front. I am sure he has a bright future ahead of him.

1st: 6639 CIECHONSKA Miss E S Riverbrue Altissimo At Aoibheanne JW

This boy has the most divine of head pieces, beautifully moulded with raised brow, dark eye and a quizzical expression that just screams quality. He is clean and balanced in outline, slightly shorter coupled. Front assembly is good, he has well sprung ribs and a firm loin. Quarters are developed and his rear angulation is in balance with his front. Coat of good condition, just lacking a little. He moved with an even stride and covered the ground well.

2nd: 6679 HART Mr G J & Mrs G A Gwendariff In The Limelight With Gilliegrae

Young dog who really was testing his handlers today, in this class they finally came together and put on a good performance. Pleasing in head and expression. Clean through the neck and shoulders. Still needs to come up on leg an little to complete the balance. Well bodied and now settled he covered the ground well.

1st: 6651 DANKS-KEMISH Mrs R D Alolfrana Hotter Than U'know

Masculine throughout with good substance yet maintaining his raciness. Head of good proportions, with raised brow and gentle expression. Clean through the neck, enough lay of shoulder and a good return of forearm. Ribs sprung and well back to a firm and well proportioned loin. Gentle slope to the topline and good finish to the croup. Well made quarters which were used well on the move. He has a true action out and back and covered the ground well.

2nd: 6674 GREENAN Miss J Anlory Aidan JW

Another well made chap who pushed one hard. Again masculine throughout. Pleasing head and expression, slightly stronger in back skull and a little more flew than Hotter Than U’Know. Strong neck, fitting neatly into well placed shoulders. Straight front, well boned legs and neat feet. Ribs well back and good finish to the croup. Not quite as firm today in topline as I have seen him in the past. Lovely bend of stifle. Presented and handled very well.

1st: 6713 STOCKTON Mr & Mrs K & P Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas JW

Today this young dog really did look the part, put down in good order and presented very well. His head is very appealing with good proportions, raised brows and a gentle expression. He flows through his lean and well muscled neck into well placed shoulders and a good return of forearm. He has depth to his forechest and ribs are sprung and well back. He is still young and needs to fully mature in body at the moment, however this did not detract from his quality in any way. His topline is so typical, gently sloping from withers to the tip of his tail, good finish to the croup. He has well made quarters, good bend to stifle and is short from hock to heel. He stands over plenty of ground and presents a very attractive outline. On the move he had drive and a good front extension, covering the ground in an effortless manner. It was my pleasure to award him the CC.

2nd: 6705 ROWBOTTOM Mr G & Mrs D Lanstara Spring Moon

A dog I have often seen and was pleased to have the opportunity to judge him. He is well made throughout without any hint of exaggeration, slightly more compact than Alchemist but still presents an appealing outline. Masculine in head and expression with raised brown and a well shaped eye. Good reach of neck and balanced angulation both front and rear. He is well bodied with his ribs sprung and leading to a short and firm loin. Topline gently slopes and a good finish to the croup. He covers the ground well and is true on the out and back. Handled well and presented beautifully.

This dog has matured well since I last judged him and is now the finished article. His head is well proportioned with a soft expression. Clean through the neck and shoulders with a gentle slope to his topline. Well made front assembly with depth to his forechest and well sprung ribs which go well back to a firm loin. Quarters are well developed with a good bend to his stifles. He covered the ground well in side gait but just crabbed a little in the challenge on the out and back. His presentation was superb, gleaming coat and hard condition. My pleasure to award him the RCC.

2nd: 6698 MITCHELL Mrs P Sh Ch Amblin's Sweet William

Another dog who is very honest throughout and has good balance. Masculine in head with good work and a gentle expression. Clean through the neck and shoulders and enough return of forearm. Gently sloping topline and a good finish to the croup. Quarters well made and in balance with his front assembly. Today he has a good action and moved positively around the ring. Handled to advantage and presented very well.

Very sweet head and expression, enough work for her age and correct eye shape. Has all of the essentials and is developing well. Balanced angulation both ends and this showed in her steady and true action on the move. Well bodied and good ribs. Very happy on the move with a good carriage.

1st: 6635 CATLING Mrs P A M Teleri Indian Summer (ai)

Very stylish young lady, eye catching in outline and very balanced for her age. Beautiful head and expression with a hint of mischief in her eye. Lovely reach of neck which fitted neatly into her shoulders. Good front assembly and she already has a good depth to her with ribs well back. Topline held throughout with a good finish to the croup. Quarters developing nicely and stands on good legs and feet. She moved carrying her head high and full of attitude, her footfall was correct and she covered the ground with ease and style. In the challenge she was more together than her brother and therefore it was my pleasure to award her Best Puppy.

2nd: 6681 HEATHER Mr & Mrs J E Sixoaks Leading Lady

Very feminine in head, well moulded and proportioned, dark eye although a shade round at this stage. Well made throughout with good angulation and correct body properties, clean in outline and standing on good legs and feet. Topline held would just like a better finish to the croup. Once she settled she was very positive on the move and carried herself well.

1st: 6660 EDWARDS Mrs S E Gwendariff Its Numero Uno At Bonhomie

This young lady was very appealing indeed, eye catching in outline and portraying balance, style with the right amount of substance. Well proportioned head with softest of expressions and raised brows. Very clean and elegant in neck with a well made front assembly, depth to her forechest and ribs springing nicely. Firm and well proportioned in loin. Topline gently sloping with a good finish to the croup. Quarters developing well with enough bend of stifle at this stage. A pleasure to watch on the move and her handler paced her just right to get the best from her. One I will certainly follow with interest as she develops.

2nd: 6682 HILLOCKS Mrs I Jonola Firebird

Another appealing young lady who has an appealing head and expression. Raised brow and lovely eye shape with a look of mischief to her. Good reach of neck but just carrying a little weight over her shoulders today. Super angulation both ends and stands on good legs and neat feet. Topline firm with a good finish to the croup. In profile she covers the ground effortlessly and has a driving action from the rear, just needs to tighten a little in front which should come with age. Another I will watch with interest.

1st: 6632 BRIDGWATER Mrs D & Mr W Blazing Bronze Eye Candy (Imp)

This bitch presents a clean outline and her handler certainly pulls her into a very appealing shape. Feminine and well proportioned head, would like a slightly darker eye, but this could come with age. Clean neck and well placed shoulders, good length of forearm, chest developing and straight in front. Good body proportions and firm in topline, would like a little better tailset as she drops it a little on the move. Quarters developed with well bent stifles and short hock to heel. Covered the ground well and her handler paced her spot on to get the best from her.

2nd: 6630 BOUTTELL, Mr R & BURBRIDGE, Mr J & BOUTTELL Miss Ixia Rainbow Brite

Presents a clean, typy and balanced outline. Feminine well proportioned head with a cracking eye and expression. Good reach of neck and shoulders well placed, enough return of forearm and chest developing well. Ribs sprung, loin firm and correctly proportioned. Quarters well made and development of second thigh was good. Stylish and free flowing on the move, just not the maturity at the moment of Eye Candy.

1st: 6662 EVANS, Ms J & CROCKER, Mr B & SIDDLE Miss A Riverbrue Keepsake

This bitch is very sound and honest, when you go over her, everything flows. Appealing in head and expression with a dark eye and enough work. Good reach of neck and good lay of shoulders, pleasing front assembly. Well ribbed with a strong loin, topline slopes gently, just a slight fall off over the croup. Quarters well made with width to the thigh and neat hocks. Moved well and covered the ground. Handler needs to have confidence in her charge and her ability, as she does a very good job.

2nd: 6670 GISBY Mrs & Miss T & G Suteresett Pina Colada

Liked her make and shape, stands over plenty of ground, is clean and balanced in outline. Feminine and well proportioned head, good work and correct eye shape, would like her eyes a little darker but this can still come with age. Strong and clean in neck, super angulation both ends and straight front. Developed forechest with ribs well back and firm in loin. Good topline which was held throughout. Moved true and covering the ground, just needs a little more attitude to get the best from her. Well handled and presented.

1st: 6678 HALL Mrs K A Riverbrue Ophelia at Glennara JW

Lovely typy bitch with a very attractive head and eye, good though the neck and shoulders, enough front angulation with good depth to the forechest. Ribs well sprung with a proportionate loin, topline a little soft at times on the stack but was maintained on the move. Would like a little better finish to the croup. Quarters developed with a right amount of bend to her stifles. Moved well and in harmony with her handler.

2nd: 6690 JONES Mrs R Kerryfair Rhosyn

Slightly larger all through than Ophelia however maintaining her femininity. Well proportioned head with a soft expression and good work. Clean through the neck and a well made front assembly, depth to forechest with ribs sprung and well back. A shade level in topline, good finish to the croup and tailset. Well bent stifles and good muscular development, good condition and well presented. Very sound and free in side gait, true coming towards but a shade close behind. Handler paced her very well and had a super rapport.

This was by far the best class of the day, some I have placed well before went card less today and it was purely down to performance and condition. Thank you for a super class to judge.

1st: 6647 CROCKER, Mr B A & SIDDLE Miss A C Riverbrue Gloriana

A picture of pure balance, style, type and quality, today this bitch stood in a class of her own and completely filled my eye. Her outline and finish attract your eye from the moment she walks into the ring. Devine head, so well moulded with chiselling under the eye, raised brows and a beautiful expression. Her neck is clean and strong and has the desired crest. Front assembly is very good with well placed shoulders and a good return of forearm. She has a developed forechest and well sprung ribs leading to a firm and correctly proportioned loin. Her topline flows and she has one of the best finishes to her croup here today. Quarters are well developed with first and second thighs having good muscular development. Stands on well boned legs and neat feet. On the move she excelled, so accurate on the out and back with a precise footfall, in profile she covers the ground with ease, maintaining her outline and making it look so easy. My pleasure to award her the CC and BOB over her litter brother and delighted to see her later take Group 2.

2nd: 6629 BOUTTELL, Mr R & BURBRIDGE, Mr J & BOUTTELL Miss Ixia Ever Hopeful

This bitch really appealed for her elegant and racy outline yet maintaining the right level of substance. Very feminine in head, which was well proportioned with a dark eye and raised brow. Good length of neck which led to well placed shoulders and a good return of forearm. Good forechest and depth to body, ribs sprung and well back. Loin is firm and well proportioned which meant her topline was maintained throughout. She has a lovely finish to the croup. Her quarters are developed with good width and short from hock to heel. On the move she was very accurate on the out and back and in profile she had an open side gait and a driving action with beautiful carriage. My pleasure to award her the RCC.
