Bakewell Open Show 3 August 2011

I very much appreciated such a quality entry. A large level grass ring but in the sweltering mid day sun with no shade for the dogs. I was impressed with so many being wide across the hindquarters something I had not found in abundance before. The majority had excellent muscletone and that was possibly the reason for seeing some good movement today. It was much better than I had seen in some of my previous appointments. The three principal winners today all coming from lines of lovely bitches showing how important good bitch lines are to the breed.

This class had the cream of the puppies in the ring at the moment and the quality of the older puppies meant that minor puppies of equal merit were down the placings. I was splitting hairs between the first three and second and third placings were decided on how they held their toplines on the move.
1 Pollard and Cook’s Grayrigge Benedict The most exquisite head I think I have ever seen on a dog and it still has the fresh look of a youngster. He has substantial bone and body for his age but already looks refined and eyecatching stacked. Well muscled arched neck set cleanly into laid back shoulders, good forechest and well angulated fore and aft. Lovely depth all through his body and strong quarters with good tailset and well carried tail on the move. Sound movement although lethargic, however on the last run around he upped the tempo enough to deserve the 1st place. The first time I have ever judged and wanted to take home a dog!
2 Gardner, Milligan-Bott and Bott’s Thendara Lenamore
3 Pollard’s Grayrigge Beatrice
(J) 3 (1 abs)
1 Armstrong-Rodgers & Cooper’s Wickenberry SiriusUpstanding and eyecatching dog with a rich colour shiny coat and thick feathering coming. Pleasant head with plenty of work, raised brows and correct finish to muzzle, clean through the throat, reachy arched neck leading to correct layback of shoulder. Ample forechest and deep in the chest. Topline pleasing but drops off a bit steep over the croup. However although exuberant on the move he made use of his tail and looked good in profile but needs to tighten in his up and down movement but that should improve as he settles and develops in mind and body. Good definition at the hocks and well shaped hindquarters. One that looked like he could be quite full of himself.

Liked my first three placings in this class very much. Hard to separate 1st and 2nd so I resorted to the question which one would I like to take home, it didn’t help as I decided I would like them both! To their advantage they both coped admirably with the heat.
1 & BOB Muir’s Romarne Savannah JW This bitch is extremely well balanced. Confirmation excellent, sufficiently angulated both ends with ample forechest and correct length and return of upper arm leading to elbows which are tightly tucked in against her very deep chest. Well developed body with ribs carried well back giving the correct length of loin. Standing well up on her toes, feet small and arched. I loved the arch to her neck leading to perfect topline and on to a beautiful set on of tail. Strong well shaped hindquarters. Feminine head with all the desirable necessities to make it Irish. Deep rich colour coat gleaming in the sun, not a lot of feathering but she has nothing to hide. Movement is just what it should be with the way she is made and it is all done with such calm handling and moving at the correct speed. Very close decision but she just looked slightly more mature in body in profile.
2 & RBOB Pollard’s Grayrigge Rosalind JW Another beautiful bitch. She too is very well made with most of the above attributes applying but longer in the loin, not so dark a coat and a longer leaner very pretty head. Another excellent mover, just flows around the ring eating up the ground and making it look effortless.
3 Booth’s Kirwilldale Snow Patrol
(G) 7 (1 abs)
1 Booth’s Kirwilldale Snow Patrol 3rd in Yearling which was no disgrace and in this class beating a dog I have done well for before and still like. He stood out for being more racy and elegant even though he was quite a substantial dog. Handsome head, masculine but not coarse with the right amount of stop, raised brows and correct finish to muzzle. Reachy neck and lovely topline, carrying the right amount of weight for his size. Good bone, well angulated without exaggeration, good forechest, deep in the chest, straight front and lovely feet. Another with a coat full of lustre and with that lovely movement to it. He moved well as did 2nd, both powering around the ring. .Beating 2nd on his better head although expressions were difficult to assess on some today as they were panting heavily.
2 Gwillam & Bozier’s Millcroft Poachers Moon Of Victoriaview
3 Irishpearl Of The Travlin Star
(PG) 8 (3 abs)
1 Driver’s Caskeys Star Gazer At StearnwoodUnexaggerated bitch. Pretty head classic shape with lots of work. Nice eye shape and colour giving lovely expression. Enough forechest and depth to her chest but not so pleasing in upper arm angulation. Decent topline and tailset with tail carried well on the move. Moved soundly covering the ground. Pushed hard by the dog in second place who had better angulations and topline but he was not carrying enough weight.
2 Baker & Breheny’s Mantafield Red Devil For Saffronlyn
3 Hart’s Rappatty Romance
(L) 3 (1 abs)
1 Oei’s Banthi Cinammon’s What a sweet little bitch, the prettiest of heads with dark eyes and the the most appealing raised brows that kept moving up and down as I was assessing her. Her head kept making me smile it was so beautiful. Gorgeous outline when stacked and on the move keeping her lovely topline. She was so well muscled and everything so strong looking about her and yet so racy and elegant. I loved the arch to her neck, angulations textbook and these shoulders were so well laid back and fine at the points something rarely found. A well developed ribcage and so much width across the quarters. Lovely dark coat. Moved like a dream. When I judged her in the class I thought she would be a hot contender for BOB and although she was one of 3 that I considered in the challenge I just thought in profile I would like a bit more of her.
2 Oei’s Boas Cinammon’s
(OD) 5 (1 abs)
Two quality dogs headed this class.
1 Gardner’s Riqitta Authentic Head masculine and quite strong but all in proportion with his body as he is substantial with plenty of bone. Dark eyes with nice expression. Well made with a profuse coat, very mature and already looks the finished picture. Has a strong muscled neck leading to lovely topline, plenty of forechest, elbows tight and good feet. Angulations all pleasing showing a lovely outline stacked. I loved him as a youngster but think he has lost a bit of his sparkle, however he is in the middle of a busy show season and that and the heat today taking it’s toll. He moved soundly keeping his topline but just not giving his all and subsequently started to carry his tail too high. I did appreciate having him to judge and he was one of the 3 I considered for BOB. I wish his owner well in her quest for his 3rd CC. He was pushed hard by the dog in 2nd place who I also admired but he was uncooperative and spoiling his outline standing.
2 Wall & Jones’s Cilcain Anything Goes To Hazelbeck Sh CM
3 Selman’s Cymbeline Impeccable
(OB) 4 (2 abs)
1 Heppell’s Cataluna My Lady Arabella Head too strong for a bitch for my preference but with dark eyes, good stop and low earset. Very mature with a substantial body and all in proportion. Good forechest and straight front, pleasing in length of neck and shoulder placement but not the desirable slope to her topline. Strong hindquarters and displaying sound and powerful movement. In good coat and condition.
