Irish Setter Association England Open Show 6 June 2010

Critique - Judge - Lynda Fauvrelle

Thank you to the Officers and Committee of the ISAE for inviting me to judge at their open show at Horspath Village Hall; the last time, I understand, that this show would be held at this venue.  Thank you also to all who entered, including those who, for whatever reason, could not attend on the day and to my two very efficient stewards.  Thankfully for all, the weather was cooler than on previous days and stayed dry despite the forecast of rain.

Best in Show was Glennara Lehana JW ShCM,

Reserve Best in Show and Best Opposite Sex was Covarney Mocha,

Best Puppy was Bardonhill Floating Moon Into Glenlaine

Best Veteran was Lynwood Strands Of Silk At Sandstream JW ShCM.

Presentation overall was very good; feet were mostly neat and tight, however I did find several level bites, plus some that were mighty close to being level, which deviates from the scissor bite stated in the breed standard – I hope this does not become the norm.

MPD (5,2)

1   Perrin & Gurney’s Danaway Picasso, compact puppy, right for age. Soft dark eye and nice earset, not best defined head at the moment but at 8mths still time to develop.    Well made throughout from good length of neck into shoulder lay, through gently sloping topline over correct croup into nice tailset.  Good bend of stifle, desired width of chest and neat feet.  Moved with confidence and drive once settled.

2   Nicholls’ Cordarragh Panama Jack, bigger than 1 and head a little stronger, nice reach of neck. Deep chest and well muscled through with strong loin, good bend of stifle, good tailset, moved steady around the ring.

3   Barker-Bell’s Balintyne The Continental

PD (9,4)

1   Gratton’s  Bardonhill Floating Moon Into Glenlaine, upstanding boy absolutely right for his age, full of himself.  Presented in lovely condition with gleaming chestnut coat.  Correct earset, nice foreface and head definition with well defined stop and raised brow and naughty twinkle in his eye, truly Irish!  Straight front, ample sternum, deep chested. Well angulated fore and aft with good width of second thigh.  Moved with style and drive holding his topline and using his tail correctly.  Best Puppy Dog and BPIS

2   Rowles’ Zendarric Mischief Managed, darker coated and more compact than 1, well defined head and brow, good body properties and angulation.  Steady mover although a little proud of his tail.

3   Cordarragh Panama Jack

JD (9,2)

1   Pullen & Atkin’s Harvancourt Harlem At Jacingail, lots to like about this boy. Handsome structured head, correct earset and wistful expression, good finish to muzzle. Nice forechest, straight front, good reach of neck, balanced and well bodied with lovely overall shape and correct tailset, good fore and aft angulation, no exaggerations. A little unsettled on the move but sure he can do it if he sets his mind to it.

2   Hogarth’s Avacet Snowdrift,  Similar style and shape to one and similar remarks apply, well bodied and proportionate. Balanced stylish mover.

3   Gisby & Pike’s Suteresett Milky Way With Scarletti JW

YD (6,2)

1   Grinham’s Amblin Affiniti, rich dark coat, well balanced outline, straight front, reachy neck into good shoulder placement, depth and substance all through, well angulated at rear with correct tailset, strong quarters used well on the move.

2   Ciechonska’s Coppers Champagne On Ice at Aoibheanne (Imp Swe), similar to 1, loved his head with well defined brow, low set on ears, excellent profile, straight front, depth and width of chest, excellent body properties with good width of croup but a little erratic on the move.

3   Cahalane’s Neathamill Lyrebird

MD (5,2)

1   Bardonhill Floating Moon Into Glenlaine

2   Stubbs’ Riverbrue Zeus, compact youngster, nice head with kindly expression, strong arched neck, good body proportions and substance, mature for his age with plenty of furnishings, good fore and aft angulation. Unsettled on the move.

3   Williamson’s Caskeys Flamboyant

ND (8,4)

1   B Floating Moon Into Glenlaine

2   Avacet Snowdrift

3   Riverbrue Zeus

GD (4,2)

1   Neathamill Lyrebird, dark gentle eye and correct earset.  Good head and outline both on the stand and move.  Strong hindquarters with good set on of tail, would like a little more forechest. Moved with purpose.

2   Needs’ Danceset The Boyfriend, a little broader in the head than 1, strong neck into sloping topline, well angulated at rear, preferred the tailset of 1. Moved ok.

PGD (4,2)

1   Needs’ Covarney Mocha , the last time I judged him he was young and very raw; he has now matured into a handsome masculine dog with beautiful dark coat.  Lots of work in his head with raised brows, dark quizzical eye with chiselling under, strong arched neck into good shoulders, well bodied with plenty of lung and heart room, pronounced sternum, strong loin, width over croup with strong quarters, hocks well let down and tight feet. Correct tailset using it to advantage as he strode out on the move with head held high. Best Dog/RBIS/BOS

2   Gladwish’s Glenlaine The Best Man, nice type, balanced outline, pleasant head with expressive eye, good length and muscle of neck, deep chested with well ribbed body and strong quarters, nice feet. Moved okay.

LD (5,3)

1   Jones’ Janter Manannan Mac Lir At Hunnicote, close decision between these two. I have always liked this boy and consider him to be an ‘honest sound dog’ with no exaggerations and nothing to hide. Balanced head, good finish to muzzle, nice shaped eye with kindly expression, well defined brow and stop, low earset, strong arched neck into excellent shoulder placement.  Well off for sternum, deep chested, well ribbed back, strong through loin and over croup with correct tailset. Good width of second thigh, well angulated stifle into low hock joint with short pasterns, tight feet. Just scored in forechest and overall musculature over 2. Needed a little more animation on the move in the challenge for Best Dog. Reserve Best Dog

2   Pullen & Atkin’s Shanoah Jump To It, have done this boy well before and have watched him mature into the finished article he is today. Lovely head structure and well defined foreface with gentle expressive eye, correct earset. Good width and depth of chest, well sprung ribs, good angulation and strong quarters, moved with ease around the ring making good use of his tail.

OD (3,1)

1   Needs & Condron’s Covarney Brings Verdi To Stourford, well defined head and brow, nice earset, clean neck and shoulders, well angulated rear end, correct topline held on move. Moved with reach and drive giving him this class

2   Rorke’s Cataluna Captivatione to Zakhan, different more compact type to1, balanced head with soft quizzical eye, well muscled neck, strong deep body, well off for bone, presented in lovely condition. Moved ok.

VD (2,1)

1   Lucas’ Caskeys Persuader From Amberlight, looking well for his age, in good condition with good overall profile. Lovely head with low earset, correct eye shape, soft and gentle with that ever- inquisitive look. Straight front, gentle sloping topline, held that and his tailset on the move which he did with drive.

MPB (6,3)

1   Thwaites’ Wynjill Harvest Wine, just approaching 9mths, lovely rich chestnut coat. Pretty head with beautiful low set and long ears, dark eye of good shape, straight front, good length of neck. Needs to drop into her rear but she is still a baby with time on her side. Settled and confident on the move. Best Puppy Bitch.

2   Barker-Bell’s Balintyne Foreign Affair, pretty baby with the softest of expressions, head long and lean and needs time to break, fine bone and racy in outline, just a little fine for me at the moment.

3   Farndell’s Cordarragh Portia

PB (3,2)

1   Balintyne Foreign Affair

JB (6,1)

1   Hall’s Shenanagin Stardrift At Glennara JW, everything to like about this elegant young lady – pretty with well defined head, dark eye and raised brow, low earset, good reach of neck into well placed shoulders, balanced and proportionate with lovely topline and tailset. Presented in excellent condition. Moved with drive and verve around the ring.

2   Humphreys’ Millcroft Moongem Of Henaleas, liked her type and shape, balanced from nose to tail. Pretty and feminine with the most pleasing head, raised brow, gentlest dark eye, well placed shoulder, good depth and breadth of chest, nicely sprung rib, all just right for her age, excellent angulation. Moved with drive and grace.

3   Brady’s Reddins Frolic Among Amberlight

YB (11,5)

1   Gratton’s Reddins Lydia At Glenlaine, caught my eye straight away, lovely shape with no exaggerations.  Loved her head and expression, very pretty with clean neck, straight front, super topline, good layback of shoulder, depth of chest, well ribbed, compact feet. Just the right bend of stifle and length of rear pastern, lovely tailset held and used correctly on the move, drove effortlessly round the ring. Reserve Best Bitch

2   Smith’s Cordarragh Olivia, built on smaller lines, loved her femininity with lovely dark eye and soft gentle expression, structured head with low set on ears. Lovely neck into clean shoulders, straight front, ample forechest, lung and heart room, ribbed back, good finish over croup.  Completely balanced. Took a while to settle and ran better on a lower lead allowing her to move with drive from her well constructed quarters.

3   Reddins Frolic Among Amberlight

MB (6,2)

1   Millcroft Moongem Of Henaleas

2   Gisby’s Suteresett Black Magic, different type to 1, rich dark coat in gleaming condition. Pleasing head with dark well shaped expressive eye.  Good reach of strong arched neck into clean shoulders, nice forechest, well ribbed and strong through loin and over croup.  Good tailset, moved ok.

3   Crossman’s Janter Constance

NB (8,3)

1   M Moongem of Henaleas

2   Reddins Frolic Among Amberlight, again different to 1, darker coated, lovely head shape, eyes, earset and outline.  Sraight front, good angulation and substance through to strong quarters.  Well let down hocks into short rear pasterns.  Neat feet. Free flowing movement using tail to advantage.

3   Warner’s Tamwood Thank You

GB (11,4)

1   Waterton’s Lynwood Kissed By An Angel At Sandstream JW, this young lady oozed quality. Steady on stand and move with correct angulation fore and aft. Well off for sternum. Lovely head shape and eye definition. Straight front, topline and tailset held on move. Moved well covering the ground with drive.

2   Williamson’s Bluesprings Atlantis, slightly larger than 1, balanced throughout in good musculature condition. Dark gentle eye and well defined head, nice length and arch of neck, clean shoulders. Moved with drive and confidence with gently sloping topline and flagging tail.

3   Tamwood Thank You

PGB (5,2)

1   Mitchell’s Amblin Acquiescence, Pretty, feminine bitch of nice size. Refined head, nice eye shape, good earset, strong neck, straight front, well ribbed back, substance without  coarseness, nice 2nd thigh, good tailset, balanced. Would like a little more slope to topline. Moved purposefully from her well developed quarters.

2   Rowles’ Corriecas Bronte With Zendarric, racier than 1, pretty and balanced, pronounced sternum, front and rear angulation spot on, nice tailset and feet. Steady mover.

3   Middleton’s Derrydore Ruby Dream At Trebeurden

LB (11,3)

Probably the hardest class of the day, quality bitches most of whom moved with balance, style and drive.

1   Hall’s Glennara Lehana JW ShCM, couldn’t fault her for presentation, style and balance, owned the ring. Feminine refined head with long low set ears, length of neck flowing into gently sloping topline, well put together with good depth of chest and length of body, well ribbed back, correct angulations, strong arched loin, correct tailset and strong 2nd thigh. Firm topline held on the move as she flowed effortlessly around the ring.  Best Bitch and BIS

2   Fox’s Satlas Bleau Eyes, have always liked this girl, she has matured nicely. Unlucky to meet 1 today who was on top form. Pretty, well worked head with dark expressive eye, good stop and raised brow, strong neck fitting into good shoulder construction. Nice bone, straight front, deep chested, well ribbed back with strong quarters, correct topline into lovely tailset and width of 2nd thigh. Steady, free flowing driving movement.

3   Brown’s Shandwick Irresistable At Tifosi

OB (2,2)

VB (4,2)

1   Waterton’s Lynwood Strands Of Silk At Sandstream JW ShCM, my notes say ”she never slacks does she” and she didn’t. So feminine with nice head and foreface definition and such gentle dark eyes, low earset, nice reach of neck into lovely topline, excellent fore and aft angulation and width of thigh.  Moved with drive, so happy and balanced with correct ‘kick-back’ of rear feet showing her pads.  BVIS

2   Brady’s Ir Sh Ch Harreds Jessica By Amberlight     , another I have always liked,  lovely head and expression, length of neck, size and shape and muscle and angulation, 2nd thigh. Nice tuck up and finish to croup, good tailset, moved a little close behind.
