Irish Setters Dogs (12 Classes)
Thank you for a very nice entry and for being prepared to try out the new venue. Sadly, I must comment again on the variety of untypical heads, wide skulls, over heavy heads with deep muzzles; and some “dished” faces resembling a pointer. We really must try to improve on this in our breeding programmes as a good well chiselled head is not only correct but such a joy to look at. I was pleased with the number of well-muscled dogs that felt as though they could do a good day’s work. Once again some otherwise nice-looking dogs were spoilt by poor tail carriage on the move.
Veteran Dog: (3,1a)
A very nice pair of dogs both in excellent condition with gleaming coats.
1. Edwards. Barleydale Lumiere. A well made dog with good front and rear angulation, well sprung deep ribs and good width of thigh. Pleasant head. Moved out well. Best Veteran.
2. Kenny. Burrenmist Hot Toddy. Good head with gentle expression. Good front and forechest. Lovely coat and condition, not really enjoying the show.
Field Trial Dog: (No entries)
Minor Puppy Dog: (9,1a)
1. Abbott, Milligan-Bott & Bott. Thendara Addiction. A very appealing baby only just 6 months. Sweet head with dark eye and slightly wicked expression. Very promising throughout, well balanced with good angulation. Looked lovely on the move driving out with correct tailset and tail action. Best puppy dog.
2. Swainston. Togipoto Ice God. Another promising young dog. Good head with pleasing expression. Good length of neck leading smoothly into strong topline. Good spring and depth of rib. Nice tight feet. Moved out well using his tail.
3. Cohen. Caispern Lorenzo with Shushana.
Puppy Dog: (11,1a)
1. Boutell, Boutell & Humphrey. Ixia Joseph. A promising young dog, balanced throughout and full of quality. Good head with lovely quizzical expression. Good front and forechest, well angulated upper arm and shoulder. Good width of thigh. Shown in lovely condition and moved out positively.
2. Lucas. Kerryfair Gets Lucky Over Amberlight. Lovely head and expression. Nicely arched neck into well laid shoulders. Good spring of rib. A little tight and tense but moved out with drive.
3. O’Callaghan. Ixia Josiah at Merryborne.
Junior Dog: (11, 2a)
1. Richardson. Kirkavagh Hernando. A very well balanced young dog of nice size. Lovely well-chiselled head with true Irish expression. Good front with good forechest. Good angulation in upper arm and shoulder. Well sprung ribs. Super width in quarters and well-muscled thighs. Drove out strongly.
2. Loughlin. Thendara Jefferson among Rohanmor. JD JUN CH. Strong well put together dog. Very mature for his age. Kind expression. Good reach of neck leading to strong topline. Good front and rear angulation. Excellent spring of rib with ribs taken well back. Wide, well-muscled quarters. Shown in hard condition and moved out powerfully.
3. Pollard & Cook. Grayrigge Benedict JW.
Yearling Dog: (12, 5a)
1.Maimal. Polmennor Fun in the Sun. This dog looked good standing and moving. Good shaped head with raised brow, correct eye and kind expression. A balanced dog with good reach of neck and strong topline. Excellent front with good forechest. Well bent stifles without exaggeration. Neat tight feet. A handful to show but moved out well.
2. Russell. Blaysdell Kilkenny of Redabrook. A more upstanding dog with good gently sloping topline and correct set on of tail. Ribs taken well back. Good width across the croup. Particularly nice looking in profile. Good quarters, short from hock to heel. Moved strongly with good tail action.
3. Needs. Thendara Joe Le Taxi for Stourford.
Novice Dog: (13, 5a)
1. Polmennor Fun in the Sun.
2. Childs. Tredura Outer Limits. A nicely made dog that really didn’t do himself any favours in the previous class. Pleasant head. Well bodied with good spring of rib and bend of stifle. Moved out well in this class.
3. Stocker. Kirkavagh Xakala.
Graduate Dog: (9, 3a)
1. Vincent & Spencer. Lynwood Kiss Chase at Caervista. A beautifully balanced boy – has super construction without exaggeration. Strong topline which he holds on the move. Good length and angulation in upper arm matched by well laid back shoulders. Good well sprung ribs. Nice width across the croup. Wide quarters with well turned stifle and short from hock to heel. Looked well proportioned and stylish standing and moving. Very impressed by the way he powered around the ring. Also won postgraduate and came under consideration for the reserve CC.
2. Griffin. Corriebran Diagem. Elegant dog with lovely head, raised brow and melting expression. Shown in super condition. A young dog that will continue to develop. Straight front. Would prefer a little more forechest. Good topline and tailset. Good width of thigh and angulation in quarters. Moved soundly.
3. Vatcher & Jones. Wynjill Farmers Boy.
Post Graduate Dog: (14, 3a)
1. Lynwood Kiss Chase at Caervista.
2. Bettis. Reddins Lester at Ornella. This dog took my eye on the move reaching out in front and driving from the rear with lovely lashing tail. True Irish head with plenty of work in it – lovely raised brow and gentle, kind expression. Nicely balanced with good angulation throughout. Just needs bodying up with better muscle tone to reach his best.
3. Cuddy. Suteresett Royal Ripple with Balbriggan.
Mid Limit Dog: (10, 1a)
1. Ciechonska. Copper’s Champagne on Ice at Aoibheanne (IMP SWE) JW. Quite a small dog but he is a pleasure to go over. Lovely well defined head with typical almond eyes full of expression, good stop and raised brow. Good bone throughout. Good front and forechest with good angulation. Nicely arched neck of good length. Rugged quarters with super width of thigh. Correct croup and tailset with good width over the croup. I was so impressed by his driving action and lashing tail using his hind quarters to the full extent when taken round by his handler. RCC.
2. Gisby & Pike. Suteresett Milky Way with Scarletti JW. An elegant, racy dog with lovely typical head and gentle expression. Good front and angulation in upper arm and shoulder. Good depth of rib with ribs taken well back. He just lacks the strength in quarters of 1. Presented in lovely condition. Moved out well with pleasing tail action.
3. Partridge. Kerrydown My Guy. JW ShCM.
Limit Dog: (9, 1a)
1. Mugford. Copper’s Undercover at Lynwood (IMP SWE) JW. I was delighted to judge this boy at his absolute best. He is perfectly balanced with everything correctly proportioned and nothing exaggerated. – a combination of power with beauty. Shown to perfection in excellent coat and condition. Good head with good stop, raised brow and quizzical expression. Good reach of neck set correctly into well laid shoulders. Good length and angulation in upper arm and good front and forechest. Good bone throughout. Tight feet with well arched toes. Super ribs with plenty of lung room. Strong gently sloping topline which he held on the move. Excellent quarters with well muscled first and second thighs. Short from hock to heel providing tremendous propulsion on the move. He was a joy to watch moving round the ring powerfully and steadily using his tail to advantage. He never put a foot wrong. Delighted to award him his 3rd CC. BOB on the referee’s decision, and BIS.
2. Gardner. Riqitta Authentic. A handsome dog shown and presented well. Attractive head with pleasing expression. Nice reach of neck set smoothly into well laid back shoulders. Good angulation in quarters. Would prefer tighter feet. Drove well round the ring with good tail carriage.
3. Roffey. Gwendariff Top of the Pops.
Open Dog: (2, 1a)
1. Hunter & Brown. Shenanagin Scholar with Braidmount. JW. This dog was shown in superb condition. He has a lovely well defined head with correct eye and melting expression. However, I liked him more as a youngster as now I find him a little exaggerated in quarters (rather long from hip to hock) and also in coat. He moved round the ring positively with drive and certainly deserved his first place although he stood alone.
