Boston & District Canine Society 7 January 2011 - Bitches
Critique - Judge - Bitches: Keith Lewis
Thanks to the Boston Committee and to the very sporting exhibitors for a very pleasurable day. The quality of the bitches before me was, in general, very pleasing and judging by the day’s first three classes there are currently some very nice youngsters holding out considerable promise for the years to come. On the downside though, there were too many cases where otherwise sound and well-balanced conformations was spoiled by a lack of the ‘true and free-flowing driving movement which the standard demands. On the credit side teeth were generally very sound.
MPB. (13, 1).
A somewhat mixed class of babies.
1. Naylor & Morrison’s Anlory Carinena. Won this class quite comfortably showing overall the best head, neck and shoulder properties and further enhanced by her lovely flowing topline and deep, well-sprung ribs. Tail set well-on and used to very pleasing effect. Really good muscle-tone developing. Well-boned, with good tight feet. Moved positively with goodl extension fore and aft. She shows real early promise and I shall watch her career with interest.
2. Partridge’s Brabrook Starstruck of Kerrydown. Another pleasing baby but, at just six months of age, she was giving almost three months away to my winner, and it showed. Pleasing expression and super length of neck. Would have preferred a little more squareness to her muzzle and slightly more accentuation to the slope of her topline. Moved soundly with correct tail carriage.
3. Laidlaw & Ritchie’s Glencarron Summer Lovin.
PB. (16, 3).
1. King’s Kirkavagh Windmill Girl.. What a cracking young lady; especially so as I was later to discover that this class, at 11 months of age, marked her debut in the show ring! So very sensitively handled to get the absolute best out of her, she deservedly went on to gain BPB, BPIB and, later. Puppy Group 3. She owns a beautiful well-chiselled head with a sweet expression, good depth of stop and nice square muzzle. Super length of well-muscled neck sweeping into well-laid shoulders and correctly angled topline. Real depth of chest and spring of rib for one so young. She has excellent balance and poise for her age and what a happy lashing tail she showed when moving. One I would happily have taken home!
2. Naylor & Morrison’s Anlory Carinena.
3. Powis’ Amberwave Puzzle.
JB. (6, 1).
1. Catling’s Shandwick Star Shine at Teleri JW. 15 months. Well-known young lady who has many pleasing qualities. Her overall balance and conformation is so sound though today, her movement, when viewed from behind, was a little untidy and could have cost her dear in a larger and more challenging class. As it was, she won comfortably today. She has the sweetest of really feminine heads with tight, low-set ears and a good length of well-muscled neck. Lovely deep chest, shoulders well-laid back into a body of medium length , stromg and well-defined quarters of good width. Gleaming coat and well-feathered tail used to good effect on the move.
2. Sturrocks’ Forfarian Caught You Lookin. 16 month bitch, who responded well to her young handler. Though today she could not match the overall substance and conformation of my winner she nevertheless, has pleasing head, neck and shoulder qualities and moved with soundness and drive.
3. Berry & Morris’s Brinara Briet.
YB. (15, 3).
Very close decision between two very attractive bitches of similar build and construction, who could well change places on another day.
1. Weller’s Suteresett Wispa at Juldeane JW. Nothing overstated about this compact 20 months girl who, though slightly the smaller of the two - and less heavily coated - relied on her more positive and precise movement today to give her that all-important winning margin. I have admired her previously from the ringside and today she confirmed most of my expectations. What a lovely and well-refined head she has, with beautiful eyes and a melting expression. Lovely arched neck, good layback of shoulder and really strong quarters with well-bent stifles. Promising!
2. Hall’s Shenanagin Stardrift at Glennara JW. 21 month bitch of whom many of the foregoing comments also apply, though I thought that today she just seemed to lack the animation and free-flowing drive of my winner, but a close call indeed!
3. Box’s Fernstart Lovesong.
GB. (9, 4).
Not a numerically strong class but interesting nevertheless for the different types on view.
1. Bridgwater’s Bridgella’s Winnie The Witch. Pleasing girl of moderate size and just a few months short of her 3rd birthday, she appeared a little between coat on the day. She appeared shorter in the body than 2 and was, for me, a little lacking in upper-arm angulation. However, she has a really deep and well-sprung chest and is generally pleasing on the eye, with a rich, gleaming coat of moderate length. She moved positively in response to some quietly deft handling, showing good extension fore and aft and displaying a lashing tail.
2. Henson’s Millcroft Moon Gipsy for Tatsbro. My notes speak of a taller, rangier and more heavily coated bitch of deep chest and with real strength and width in her quarters. When initially going over her I just about preferred her front angulation and set-on of head to that of my class winner, but the latter’s more positive and extended movement and slightly more-balanced outline swung the final decision in her favour.
3. Hyslop & Stewart-Ritchie’s Gwendariff Whata Showgirl.
PGB. (12, 4).
1. Bott’s Bardonhill Days Are Diamond JW. Beautifully presented 4 year-old, as is invariably the case with exhibits from this kennel. A taller, more substantial bitch than 2 with good bone and a profusion of glistening dark-chestnut coat. Beautifully-balanced head with deep, close-set ears and a muscular neck free of throatiness. Pleasing eyes and expression, with well-raised brows. Moved with some style holding her topline to good effect.
2. Rout’s Shaytell Joleene. Slightly smaller, longer-cast and more lightly-coated bitch who was one of the day’s most positive and precise movers, employing a really happy & lashing tail to complete an altogether pleasing picture. Well-balanced head with nice wistful expression and really deep ear-set.
3. Waterton’s Lynwood Kissed By An Angel at Sandstream JW.
LB. (13, 1).
1. Morgan’s Kerrsienna A Paige In History for Deaconara JW (Imp USA). I first saw this exhibit from the ringside when, as a youngster, she was entered in a class at Driffield some 4 years ago and caught my attention. Today however was her first time under me and she did not disappoint. Beautiful head, sweep of neck and well-laid shoulders into gently angled topline, through wide, strong quarters to generously-feathered tail, set on well and used to very pleasing effect. Deep, well-sprung chest, with just the right amount of width in front and excellent angulation fore and aft. In truth, I would still liked to have seen her moved with more pace and freedom in this class but she still did enough to earn my vote today and the CC.
2. Hinslea’s Northamber Causin A Riot JW . Altogether pleasing and well-balanced 4 year-old whose title will surely come before too long. Smaller in stature than today’s winner though arguably more positive on the move. Another sweet-headed girl with a strong, well-muscled neck though not quite the length of 1. She showed lovely qualities over shoulder, chest and ribs. Soundly angulated at both front and back with good bend of stifle.
3. Stevenson’s Lochlorien Prime Suspect for Andley JW.
OB. (11, 3).
1. Powis’ Sh Ch Amberwave Freckles JW. What a pleasure it was to go over this nicely understated 4 year-old and to find how very sound she is in all departments, everything where it should be and what you see is what you get. Lighter in frame than some but very pleasing on the eye and such good balance. She moved out soundly with full extension front and rear and showing a pleasing tail carriage. I loved her sweet, refined head and her nice but naughty expression. RCC.
2. Hall’s Glennara Lehana JW, ShCM. Another sweet-headed girl of slightly larger size to 1, and in full bloom. For me, today, she could not quite match quite the overall balance and conformation of 1, but very pleasing just the same. Really deep, well-ribbed chest, strong over neck and shoulders. Well let-down at rear, super bone and condition.
3. King’s Kirkavagh Ivanjica JW.
