I have always thought of Setter & Pointer as one of the most prestigious of shows in our calendar so I felt privileged to be invited to officiate at this years show. My thanks to the committee for their hospitality and to all the exhibitors for their support.
Veteran Dog: (4:0)
1. Bott & Morgan’s Sh.Ch. Ember Gene Simmons Sings Quensha (imp). At 8 years young, in sparkling form, obviously no one has told him he can slow down!! Good finish to muzzle with good eye shape and colour, his head could have better balance for my eye, but not unpleasant. Strong, medium length to his nicely crested neck which fits smoothly into good layback to shoulders and decent return of upper arm, well sprung ribs carried well back, strong loin and well angulated hindquarters, short rear pasterns. Moved with verve and temperament. Beautifully handled and presented in hard muscular condition. Best Veteran in Breed and ultimately In Show – Congratulations.
2. Torpy’s FOLLIDOWN RED GROUSE J.W.: Lovely head and expression good balance and raised brows, well angulated front assembly strong body and well ribbed back, so important for body strength, excellent hindquarters good feet, moved soundly but just didn’t have the “panache” of winner.
3. Sturrock’s FORFARIAN SORCERER.
Minor Puppy Dog (12:0)
Baby dogs, much more than bitches do go through some stages when they literally are just all wings and feathers. Such was the case here and I will watch many of them with interest as they progress and eventually realise they have 2 legs at the back!
1. Naylor & Morrison’s ANLORY MATARO: Calm young man who kept himself in good balance. Liked his head, my notes say “fabulous nose”! Good finish to muzzle, with plenty of work in his foreface, well shaped dark eye and raised brows giving appealing expression. Excellent body properties and the best of feet, small neat and well filled. Moved very well showing nice extension and drive.
2. Bailey’s GLENCARRON SUNBEAM; Pleasing head, although more work to come, good eye shape and colour, well angulated front with good bone, deep well sprung ribs good width to hindquarters, good feet and moved well, just preferred the scope of 1.
3. Williams KIRKAVAGH WAYWARD LAD.
PUPPY DOG (8:1w/d)
1. Bott’s BARDONHILL GAMBLIN’ WILLIE: Lovely shape and balance, refined yet masculine. Super head and expression dark well shaped eye, balanced and proportionate, my hands ran smoothly from the crest of his neck through his well laid back shoulders, good prosternum and return of upper arm, deep well sprung ribs strong loin to wide hindquarters with short rear pasterns used to good effect on the move, neat feet. Certainly one to watch for the future.
2. Ward’s BARDONHILL THE HUSTLER CONNING COPPERWHITE; I see from my catalogue this is litter brother to 1 and has many of his brothers’ virtues. He is a little heavy in skull for me at this stage but has nice chiselling through his foreface, good dark well shaped eyes and stands over a strong body with balanced angulation fore and aft. Good feet, moved soundly.
3. Bailey’s GLENCARRON SUNBEAM.
JUNIOR DOG (15:3)
1. Gratton’s BARDONHILL FLOATING MOON INTO GLENLAINE: Presented a balanced racy outline, beautifully chiselled head with correct finish to foreface and correct eye shape under wonderful raised brows. Well crested neck smoothly fitting into wither area, nicely laid back shoulders, good prosternum, deep ribs carried well back to strong loin, wide powerful quarters, moderate angulation to stifles, short strong rear pasterns, good feet, moved very well showing reach and drive, well handled and well conditioned.
2. Bott’s BARDONHILL TOM FOOLERY: Lovely type as expected from this kennel. Pleasing head and expression with plenty of work and mischievous expression. Clean through neck and shoulders good prosternum and front assembly, strong body. Wide well angulated hindquarters good feet, moved freely.
3. Naylor & Morrison’s ANLORY BAROSSA
YEARLING DOG (16:5)
1. Gisby’s SUTERESETT MILKY WAY WITH SCARLETTI JW: Just a lovely Irish Setter, ticks most of the boxes asked for in our standard. Super head, balanced correct finish to muzzle, well shaped dark eye, raised brows. Head long and lean, well defined occiput, strong well crested neck of correct length sweeping smoothly into the best of fronts, standing over neat tight feet, deep ribs with good spring. Strong loin, wide well angulated hindquarters with super length to his well shaped croup. Carried himself so well on the move, beautifully presented and conditioned, just needs to mature to achieve what I think must be a glittering career.
2. Gratton’s BARDONHILL FLOATING MOON INTO GLENLAINE
3. Greenan’s ANLORY THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OVER JULESET JW.
NOVICE DOG: (13:6w/d)
1. Naylor & Morrison’s ANLORY BAROSSA: Well presented and in excellent condition. Pleasing head and expression with no sign of coarseness, well shaped dark eye, raised brows, clean through neck and shoulders, strong body, deep ribs, wide hindquarters well muscled. Moved soundly.
2. Bott’s BARDONHILL TOM FOOLERY
3. Donkin’s WICKENBERRY JACKPOT
GRADUATE DOG (8:0)
1. Kniveton’s FEYLINCI BEACHCOMBER AT ORSTONE J.W. Racy, balanced dog showing quality throughout. Head has good proportions and well finished muzzle. Gently sloping topline, well balanced front and rear angulation. Quality bone, wide well angulated hindquarters good length to croup, moved well showing extension and reach.
2. Vallance’s BRAIDMOUNT MIDNIGHT ROUE. Good head and expression no trace of coarseness, nicely crested moderate neck fitting cleanly into good layback of shoulder and showing prosternum. Strong body properties wide hindquarters. Would have liked a little more angulation through his hindquarters and more articulation on the move.
3. Glithero & Arkell: COPPERSHELL VINCENT.
POST GRADUATE DOG: (9:2)
1. Kniveton’s SERRULA PLAYAROUND AT ORSTONE: Completely unexaggerated dog. Moderate throughout and very correct. Racy outline, with gently sloping topline. Lovely balanced head with wistful expression . Clean neck into good forehand balanced neatly to hind angulation. Strong body deep well sprung ribs carried back to strong loin. The best of feet. Moved showing lovely reach and drive carried himself very well.
2. McNeil’s GWENDARIFF ROCK DEE JAY OVER GLENNLOKHEN. Another top quality boy, showing a racy balanced outline, Pleasant head of good proportions well shaped eye raised brows, clean neck smoothly into shoulders, decent front, deep well sprung ribs strong loin, wide hindquarters with nicely angulated stifles, short strong rear pasterns, good feet. Just out moved a little by the winner.
3. Glithero & Philo’s COPPERSHELL CAZANOVAH JW ShCM
MID LIMIT DOG (9:1)
1. Roffey’s GWENDARIFF TOP OF THE POPS. Racy, stylish and balanced. Long lean head with well finished muzzle , well shaped dark eyes, raised brows and the most mischievous expression! Excellent front assembly good body properties well angulated hindquarters, and super feet. Has more scope than his owner gives him credit for and can stand over more ground. Moved soundly showing reach and drive, just needs to mature a bit more to challenge for top honours.
2. Hunter & Brown’s SHENANAGIN SCHOLAR WITH BRAIDMOUNT JW: Very well made dog with pleasing head and expression, good eye shape and colour. Good front angulation with plenty of forechest deep ribs carried back to strong loin, wide hindquarters moved well pushing off strong rear pasterns.
3. Barker-Bell’s BALINTYNE CHANCES ARE JW
LIMIT DOG (6:3)
Three dogs all divergent in type.
1. Mugfords COPPERS UNDERCOVER AT LYNWOOD (Imp Swe) JW. When he first arrived in this country I had high hopes of this dog and thought him a very promising puppy ,but for some reason doesn’t seem to have grown on. He has a scrumptious head and expression, certainly ticks all my boxes. Neck cleanly set into well angulated shoulders, a little straight through upper arm return, deep well sprung ribs , muscular loin, wide hindquarters, good feet. For me his overall balance fails on leg length to body length. Standing in the Challenge I felt he could not compete for scope or stature.
2. Cohen’s CAISPERN VILETTE WITH SHUSHANA. A bit too much for me but has quality nonetheless Good bone. Well angulated front assembly with good forechest, deep well sprung ribs, powerful loin wide hindquarters, sloping topline, moved freely.
3. Kenny’s BURRENMIST HOT TODDY.
OPEN DOG (7:1)
What a fabulous class! When confronted with so much quality the final decisions had to be on performance as every of these dogs exude great quality. The first 4 could change places any day and frankly any minute! So much to like about them all and very worthy title holders. My thanks to all these exhibitors for the honour of judging their dogs.
1. Edwards GWENDARIFF ROCKIN’ ROBIN JW: “Balanced, racy, full of quality” 3 ticks there then. Head well proportioned, long and lean, correct finish to muzzle, the most mischievous look through his well shaped eye with brows which seemed to have a life of their own!, Crested neck, gliding smoothly into well laid back shoulders excellent prosternum and return of upper arm creating correct front assembly shown to advantage by excellent muscle definition. His deep well sprung correctly shaped ribs flowed through to strong loin, wide hindquarters well bent stifles short rear pasterns and the best of feet. My hands going over him flowed without any trace of coarseness yet he is well boned. On the move he gave of his best and never stopped showing reaching forward in even strides from his driving rear topped off by his ever slashing tail. Standing he was a picture of balance of leg length to body length topped of with a gently sloping topline, glowing coat and the best of condition defining his musculature. He and his owner never gave an inch to the hot competition and it was my great pleasure to be able to award him C.C. – his Crown and with complete agreement of my co-judge - Best of Breed.
2. Holley & Cheney’s Sh.Ch. GWENDARIFF POP THE QUESTION JW: Another top drawer exhibit. Lovely head and expression with that quizzical look that makes me smile. Well finished foreface with lots of work dark well shaped eye, good crested neck cleanly into excellent layback with plenty of forechest. Deep correctly shaped ribs carried well back giving strength to topline, strong well developed loin, wide hindquarters with good length to croup and correct angulation to hindquarters in comparison to front assembly. Short strong rear pasterns and great feet . Standing with his gently sloping topline he exuded breed type for me. Moved soundly and with lovely lashing tail holding his topline. R.C.C.
3. Roffey’s Sh.Ch. Danaway Lancelot of Autumnwood. Another fabulous dog who typifies for me the breed standard.
