North East of England Irish Setter Club 23 October 2010 Critique
Critique - Judge - Dogs - Dr Rosemary Whitelock
I first awarded CCs in 1973 and have seen many changes in the breed over the years, in particular in coat and presentation. The breed has now become much more glamorous which is fine so long as under the coat and feathering is a dog with correct conformation so that it can move soundly and with drive. I do feel that the excessive feathering on some makes them look unbalanced. The heavy heads that were prevalent a few years ago were not present today, in some cases the pendulum has swung too far, a finer feminine head does not look right on a deep-chested, well-made dog! Tail carriage is becoming a problem in the breed but today there were only a few with incorrect high tail carriage. The quality in the higher classes was excellent and there were 4 or 5 dogs to whom I would have happily awarded a CC. This augurs well for the future of the breed with breeders having a good choice of stud dogs to improve their stock. The quality of the juniors was also good so I feel the breed is in a strong position for the future
MPD (7,1)
1. Christie's Drumwhaur Irish Gold, Tall, rangy youngster, appealing head and expression, well bodied, excellent angulation, moved well for age. Best puppy dog.
2. Naylor and Morrison's Anlory Mataro, a month younger than the winner, lovely outline, steady happy mover, just preferred the winner in head at present.
3. Cox's Tiroen Time Lord
PD (7,1)
1. Bott's Bardonhill Gamblin Willie, Lovely balanced youngster, typical head and expression, true front, sound mover.
2. Williamson's Kirwilldale Chaska, Another promising one, just a little less balanced than the winner at present, good head and expression, moved soundly.
3. Naylor and Morrison's Anlory Barossa
VD (3)
1. Bott and Morgan's Sh.Ch. Ember Gene Simmons Sings Quensha (imp), a 7 year old not yet showing signs of aging, put down in lovely bloom and condition. Not a tall dog but well balanced although the excessive length of coat, particularly on the front, does tend to make him look short in leg. Moved freely with drive which was the deciding factor over the second. BVIS.
2. Lorrimer's Sh.Ch, Karidell Connoisseur,10½ year old dog. Standing looked a picture, lovely head and expression, excellent angulation. Moved soundly but obviously not the freedom of movement of the winner.
3. McAvoy's Cymbeline Fiseal
JD (12,4)
A strong class with dogs at varying stages of maturity.
1. Gratton's Bardonhill Floating Moon into Glenlaine, An eye-catching young dog, very mature for his age. Beautiful outline, excellent angulation, great depth of brisket, typical head and expression, moved soundly with drive. I hope he fulfils this early promise.
2. Cohen's Brabrook Mastercraftsman with Shushana, a good young dog who showed better than I have seen before. Lovely dark rich colour, masculine head, perhaps a little strong in head at present but hopefully this will balance with full maturity. Excellent body and angulation, moved with drive.
3. Bott's Bardonhill Tom Foolery
YD (7)
1. Gratton's Bardonhill Floating Moon into Glenlaine.
2. Wood's Reddins Falcon, very close up, just not moving as well as the winner today, typical head and expression though a little plainer than the winner, true front, excellent depth and good rear angulation.
3. McLarnon's Glenavna Journey South
MD (7, 2)
1. Cohen's Brabrook Mastercraftsman with Shushana.
2. Bott's Bardonhill Tom Foolery.
3. Barker-Bell's Balintyne the Continental
ND (8)
1.Wood's Reddins Falcon.
2. Cohen's Brabrook Mastercraftsman with Shushana.
3. Bott's Bardonhill Tom Foolery
UD (10, 5)
1. Price's Severnvale Simply Special, a very promising 2 year old, rangy and later maturing than some his age. I loved his head and expression, great depth of brisket, excellent angulation, moved soundly although a bit erratic at times.
2. Cohen's Brabrook Mastercraftsman with Shushana.
3. Bott's Bardonhill Tom Foolery
GD(2)
1. Price's Severnvale Simply Special.
2. Riddell's Cataluna Doc Holliday via Trunorth, good clean outline, in excellent coat and condition, moved soundly, just not masculine enough for me.
PGD (10,2)
1. Gardner's Riquitta Authentic, Masculine dog, handsome head and expression, great depth of brisket, excellent rear angulation, very sound mover. Just needs time to achieve top honours.
2. Laidlaw and Green's Glencarron Olympic Gold, A lovely young dog, really good head and expression, correct coat, good depth and angulation, moved soundly.
3. Bott's Bardonhill Grinning Bear.
MLD (6, 2)
1. Swainston's Glenvarna Himself, Shown in lovely coat and condition, typical head and expression, good deep chest, moved soundly but his high tail carriage prevented me considering him for higher honours.
2. Deighton's Ballintyne Once in a While, a good sound dog, difficult to fault, typical head and expression, deep brisket, good angulation, moved soundly.
3. Cox's Tiroen True Blue
LD (11,2)
1. Bott's Bardonhill Ginger-Whinger, A well balanced sound dog shown in excellent coat and condition. Correct angulation front and rear, good depth of brisket, moved soundly with drive. I just preferred the heads of the CC and ResCC winners.
2. McNeil's Glencarron Shakatak, Lovely headed dog, great depth of brisket, good angulation, moved soundly.
3. Crocker and Hammick's Riverbrue Dionysus
OD (10,2)
1.Kennedy's Ir.Sh.Ch.Glennara Coer de Lion, Took my eye immediately, only 2½ years old yet mature and well balanced, nothing exaggerated, excellent typical head and expression, good depth, correct angulation front and rear, shown in excellent coat and condition. When he came to move I thought his youthful exuberance might cause him to throw away his chances but he settled down and moved with style and drive. Dog CC and BIS.
2. Holehan and North's Sh Ch Erinade Starwars, 4 years old and in his prime, put down in excellent condition, gleaming coat and well feathered but not to excess, typical head and expression, deep chest, excellent rear angulation. Moved soundly. It was a close decision between these two, he scored in forechest but was slightly more upright in shoulder than the winner. In all other departments there was little between them. Res CC and RBIS.
3. McLarnon's Sh.Ch. & Ir.Sh.Ch. Northamber Just Cause for Glenavna
Beginners D (5,1)
1. Gratton's Bardonhill Floating Moon into Glenlaine.
2. Deighton's Balintyne Once in a While.
3. Gardner's Mayfred Mr Moondance.
