Critique - Judge Dogs- Marita Bott (Bardonhill)
Irish Setter Dogs
My thanks to the hardworking committee for their very kind hospitality throughout my stay.
Considering the entry fees are so high these days, the show taking place on a Tuesday and located so far south, this was a lovely entry . Thank you all for taking the time to travel and exhibit your dogs under me and apologies to all the puppy owners who arrived at the ring at 9am, as I did myself, only to find we had no stewards until 9.15!
I have written a critique on the first three places in each class as I consider that owners who have prepared their dogs and travelled so far deserve more than just a prize card.
Dog CC, Best of Breed and Gundog Group 3:
Milligan-Bott & Bott Sh.Ch. Scotselaw Detroit Spinner by Thendara JW
Res Dog CC: Wall & Jones Cilcain Anything Goes to Hazelbeck
Best Puppy Dog: Peters Polmennor Funtime
Minor Puppy Dog ( 4 entries - 0 absent)
1 Peters Polmennor Funtime I found the head, outline and topline on this 7mths baby appealing. He is, however, rather straight through his front angulation and lacking in body at present but at this tender age he has plenty of time to develop. loved his flowing movement which ultimately carried him through to win this class and later best Dog puppy.
2 Farndell Cordarragh Rembrandt 7mths baby of a smaller type moving well. I liked his outline and sweet head and expression.
3 Marmol Polmennor Fun In The Sun 7mths.Taller than his brother and very much at the leggy stage at present. Strong hindquarters, a little plainer in head than two above.
Puppy Dog( 8 entries - 1 absent)
1 Naylor & Morrision Anlory Barossa A pleasing head and eye, on this boy and in good coat, body and condition Overall a little square in outline for me but he moved well albeit a little close behind today.
2 Drinkwater Brabrook Shanavaz well bodied puppy with lovely dark coat and nice hindquarter angulation just preferred head of above.
3 Sheldon Balintyne Foreign Intrique at Delsanto lovely puppy a shame he would not cooperate at all with his handler on the move today. Shown in excellent coat and condition
Junior Dog( 11 entries - 2 absent) Super Class
1 Gisby & Pike Suteresett Milky Way with Scarletti JW I have admired this boy from a tiny baby. Now 15 mths, he possesses a truly classic head - sadly so rare in our breed these days , exquisite chiselling and correct eye shape with just the right amount of muzzle. Just the right size overall, he is well proportioned, nicely bodied with sound front and rear hind angulation. Gently sloping firm topline and tail set on correctly plus he stands on neat feet. Later in the challenge he looked very much the youngster, and so he should, needing more furnishings which will undoubtedly come with maturity - then he will be the one to beat.
2 Ciechonska Coppers Champagne on Ice at Aoibheanne (Imp) Pushed the winner hard as he has much more finish being already in superb coat and body condition despite his tender age of 14mths. Again a nicely headed boy sound throughout with lovely strong, well angulated hindquarters . A little longer cast than above and I preferred the length to height proportions of 1st.
3 Lucas Irishmagic of the Trav'lin Star Avec Amberlight (Imp)pleasing in outline although not quite as developed in hindquarters as the two above and a little straight in front upper arm angulation. He only needs time. Loved the rich coat colour and his dark expressive eyes. He went on to win the novice class.
Yearling Dog( 4 entries - 1 absent)
1 Lauwers Thendara Frozen Asset Gorgeous boy. Such a striking dog in outline with lean head, clean neckline and gently sloping topline with correct set on of tail. he has very well angulated hindquarters although I wouldn't like to see any more exaggeration here. In tremendous coat and very mature for his 18mths and very showy on the move. Altogether a most promising boy.
2 Gwilliam & Bozier Millcroft Tinkers Moon of Victoriaview. not quite as elegant in head and clean over neckline as the above. However he pleased in his movement and has strong hindquarters. Presented in good coat and condition.
3 Axon Brinara Back in the Running not quite so forward and a little plainer in head than two above. He moved steadily although in outline I feel he needs time to mature and drop into his hindquarters.
Novice Dog( 5 entries -0 absent)
1 Lucas Irishmagic of the Trav'lin Star Avec Amberlight (Imp)
2 Axon Brinara Back in the Running
3 Drinkwater Brabrook Shanavaz
Graduate Dog( 12 entries - 4 absent)
An excellent class here
1 Chorley-Newton & Chorley Kerryfair Snow Fox JW Love him for his size, and outline. Maturing nicely now I think he looks exactly right for his 2yrs 3mths and not overdone in any department. He has elegance and a lovely gentle sloping topline from his head, right through to his tailset. Exquisitely chiselled head without any trace of coarseness. Coming into lovely coat now. Just wish he would stride out with a little more positive drive and purpose when on the move
2 Buchan Loskeran Dream Maker Slightly heaver in build than above but what lovely hard condition this owner presented her dog in. He was unlucky to meet the above in this excellent class. Showed in excellent coat and sound throughout, I just preferred the general type and size of the winner.
3 Partridge Kerrydown My Guy JW I have placed this dog well before and he has matured overall into an excellent typy dog. Larger than my winner he stands on very strong hindquarters with excellent development of 2nd thigh. Moving well today and in super coat.
Post Graduate Dog ( 19 entries - 2 absent)
My class of the day - I would have been happy to have given a 1st to any of the five I placed in the final line-up
1 Edden & Crocker Meadway Morrisey I have watched this dogs career with interest as he has greatly appealed to me right from a young puppy. Totally refined he excels in outline. Beautiful in head and eye. His movement is spot on being precise and effortless which ultimately was why he was awarded this place in such a hard class. He is only 2 years old so very young for this class. It remains to be seen whether in time he gains more coat to complete the overall picture as when it came to the challenge he still looked very much the baby.
2 Needs Covarney Mocha very close decision here. Another lovely exhibit. Overall a lovely strong, fully mature, workmanlike type with rugged hindquarters and excellent body. Pleasing in head he possesses a thick, dark coat so although better furnished that my 1st just not so steady and precise on the move
3 Bouttell & Harris Konakakela Red Admiral at Ixia I love this dog and his'eager to please' happy temperament shone through as he flowed round the ring with gently wagging tail. No trace of coarseness here. Excels in his outline with beautiful head and dark expressive eyes. Would benefit from a little more condition and finish on his coat but again was very close up.
Limit Dog(13 entries - 3 absent)
1Wall & Jones Cilcain Anything Goes to Hazelbeck This 4yr dog won the Undergrad Class under me last time I judged and how he has come on. Looked beautiful today, he has now matured in body and in full and well presented coat. Possesses the desired elegance in his head and nicely shaped eye with a lovely flow over his neck and front. he moved steadily carrying just the right amount of weight. I was pleased to award him the Res CC today.
2 Mugford Copper's Undercover at Lynwood JW (Imp) at two years old a very young boy to be in this tough class but he well held his own. Obviously not so mature as above. I found him very pleasing in outline. For me a little thick set over the neckline and I preferred the head and eye of above.
3 Crosswell Gwendariff Mr Noticeme JW quality boy of the size I like. Strong hindquarters. Shown in good coat and was shown in lovely condition and handled well. Just drops a little over croup
Open Dog( 7 entries - 0 absent)
1Milligan-Bott & Bott Sh.Ch. Scotselaw Detroit Spinner by Thendara JW I wasn't going to deny a beautiful dog his day when he was looking as good as this boy did. At five years old he is probably now at the very peak of his show career. Put down in immaculate condition with his coat groomed to perfection he showed himself off well when moving both in profile and across the ring. Lovely in head with nicely shaped skull, eye and finish to his muzzle - I forgave the slight lack of pigmentation.. Clean reach of neck. Excellent body properties carrying enough weight and strong hindquarters. I was pleased to award him the Challenge Certificate, which was followed by Best of Breed in complete agreement with my co-judge Alister Watt. I watched him go to a well deserved Gundog Group 3 later in the day where he looked superb(and I nearly missed my train!) Congratulations.
2 Lauwers Sh.Ch. Jonola Dr Doolittle nice topline and body on this boy with clean neck, excellent strong hindquarters and standing on good tight feet. Would have liked a little more front upper arm angulation. Not in the condition of the above however he showed and moved well today.
3North & Holehan Sh.Ch. Erinade Starwars JW Lovely boy who has done well under me previously. Scores in outline body and hindquarters. Just looked a little tired and not very enthusiastic today
