Critique - Judge Diane Ritchie (Gwendariff)

Although indoors we had an excellent ring of good size which enabled me to get a good assessment of movement. This, I felt was important as the last time I judged I had rather a small ring with no real chance to view dogs movement. I was looking for dogs with good type, construction and sound movement adding a bit of style along the way – I did find this in my winners and also through the strong bitch classes.  I found a real improvement in fronts this time which really pleased me.  I enjoyed this appointment and wish to thank all exhibitors for allowing me to evaluate their dogs and for accepting my decisions in a very sporting manner.  Thank you also to the Committee for inviting me to judge at this very wet but well run show!

1st & BPIB : BOTT Mrs M Bardonhill Gamblin Willie What a gorgeous puppy.  I absolutely loved him.  From every angle he exudes quality.  Such a lovely style of setter so unexaggerated with everything in the right place. Dark coated with great depth and texture of coat.  Most gorgeous head and eye with correct eye shape and colour and lovely pigmentation.  Correct planes to head, good amount of stop and raised brows and correct length and finish to foreface.  Quality bone and neat tidy feet .  Good in forechest with enough return of upper arm.  Deep ribs, well carried back to correct length of loin.  Wide through first and second thigh.  Short from hock to heel, moved steady and true.  Surely a certain star for the future. Good luck..

2nd: WILLIAMSON Miss K Kirwilldale Chaska A little bigger than 1 all through and also of good quality.  Excellent body properties with excellent angulation front and rear.  Strong well muscled quarters and plenty of width through first and second thighs.  Good bone and feet.  Deep chested and well sprung ribcage, carried well back to short, strong loin.  Put down in really good order.  Moved positively.  Lots to like about him.

1st: GISBY, Mrs T & GISBY, Miss G & PIKE Mrs R Sutersett Milky Way With Scarletti JW .  I have admired this youngster from the very first time I saw him as a minor puppy.  He has such appeal. A classic head , he is full of quality, elegance and refinement but still maintaining that strength and power which would enable him to do a days work.  Considered for the top cards but still needs more time to complete the picture. His head piece for me is simply stunning without any trace of coarseness and the most delicious expression.  Clean through neck and shoulder and good return of upper arm and enough prosternum.  Deep chested, well sprung ribs, carried well back to strong loin area. Clean unbroken topline into correct tailset.  Good width to first and second thighs and good bend of stifle.  Short strong rear pasterns. Excellent bone and neat feet.   Moved steadily and true and with enough reach and propulsion. Presented to me in tip top condition, gleaming in coat and with excellent musculature.  I could easily take him home!

2nd: RANCE Mrs D Mayfred Mr Magnifico Different type to 1.  Good eye shape and colour, enough stop and raised brow.  Little heavy in flew for me.  Strong through neck into good topline. Clean through neck and shoulder.  Good bone and neat feet.  Excels in front assembly with good forehand.  Deep chested, strong ribcage of good length and spring.  Strong loin area and strong quarters.  In  firm muscle throughout.  Presented and handled well.

3rd: GARDNER Miss T Mayfred Mr Moondance

1st: LAUWERS Mr W & Mrs A Thendara Frozen Asset. Nice type who as always from this exhibitor is presented and handled well.  Already carrying a near full body of coat and feather.  Good quality bone, neat tidy feet.  Excellent topline into tailset.  Very pleasing headpiece with all the essentials.  Very dark eye of good shape.  Correct amount of stop and lovely raised brow.  Excellent length and finish to foreface. Correct skull shape with absolutely no coarseness.  Good front assembly with enough prosternum and return of upper arm.  Strong wide quarters and good amount of second thigh., although I would like him a little more moderate in rear angulation.

2nd RANCE Mrs D Mayfred Mr Magnifico

3rd: 1 WOOD Mrs S C & Mr S A Reddins Falcon

1st: HUNTER Mr D A & Mrs L Sametsuz Scriptwriter.  I have done this boy well before and he is developing nicely.  A stylish setter with lots to like. He presents a very pleasing shape and has much to commend him when one gets ‘hands on’.  Good angulation front and rear with great width to first and second thighs.  Good angulation in front with good return of upper arm and prosternum.  Deep chested and well ribbed.  Strong in loin.  Quality bone with the very best of feet.  Good topline and tailset.  Head pleasant enough although a tad strong for me.  Moved well.  Handler needs to raise his game if he is to compete at the next level.

2nd: BARKER-BELL Mrs G Balintyne Wish Me Luck Different in type to 1, presents a balanced picture in outline.  Lost out to 1 on front assembly although I did prefer this exhibits headpiece.  Good dark eye, of correct colour and shape and with excellent pigmentation.  Good amount of stop with raised brows.  Excellent skull shape and good length of foreface with lovely clean finish to muzzle.  Strong neck leading into lovely topline and correct tailset.  Good quality bone with excellent neat tight feet.  Deep chested, well ribbed back, strong in loin.  Excels in hindquarters with short strong rear pasterns.

3rd: KNIVETON Mr P & Mrs J Feylinci Beachcomber At Orstone JW

LD (5 Entries) Abs: 0

My notes say – close decision between 1 & 2, both of the top drawer.  Would like two first prize cards.

1st & RCC WILLIS Mr W & Mrs J Jacwilins Willoughby JW One has to have ‘hands on’ this boy to really appreciate him.  He does not carry a profuse amount of coat but he has enough and it is in tip top condition.  Today he was presented in first class order and in strong musculature condition. Very pleasing in head with good eye colour and of correct shape.  Good stop and raised brow and enough chiseling.  Lovely finish to foreface. He totally excels in front assembly with everything fitting smoothly together and the best of angles.  Good topline and tailset.  Deep chested, strong in rib and with good amount of length and spring of rib.  Strong loin continuing into a good backend.  He comes together so well on the move – strong, positive and true with a good attitude and at one with his handler. A racy setter with no exaggerations.  I was pleased to be able to count him in the top drawer and award him today the RCC

2nd: BOTT Mrs M Bardonhill Ginger- Whinger JW  I have never really been ringside when this exhibit has been in the ring and have only seen photos of him.  The photos of this dog just do not do him enough justice. He is every inch the champion and deservedly so. Just lost out to 1 on front extension on the move.  A real typey boy with a lovely headpiece.  Nothing exaggerated, excellent skull shape, good eye colour and shape.  Plenty of work throughout – most appealing.  Good through neck into shoulder and topline and tailset correct.  Good front assembly with good return of upper arm and prosternum.  Excellent bone, neat tidy feet.  Good depth , spring and length of ribcage. Good angulation in rear with enough first and second thighs. Lovely length and set of pelvis.  Moved positively and true.  Presented in excellent order and as always expertly handled.

3rd: KNIVETON Mr P & Mrs J Serrula Playaround At Orstone

OD (4 Entries) Abs: 0

Unfortunately not a strong open class but was pleased with my winners and the open winner pulled out all the stops in the Challenge to take him to the top spot.

1st & CC  SHAW-RAINEY, Mrs H R & RAINEY Mr T Ir Sh Ch Trawricka High Jinks At Starchelle (Imp)  When this dog came to this country I was not a fan.  However, he has developed into a really lovely dog and this current handler really gets the best from him.  Together they are a picture on the move – the whole package;  a fully coated well presented dog with all the essentials and excellent front, strong quarters and the best of muscled hindquarters enabling him to power around the ring, reaching for the ground in front and all so effortlessly.   A pleasing head with raised brow and good amount of stop.  Clean finish to foreface.  Good ear set, strong well muscled neck leading into firm topline and tailset, with the desired gentle slope.  Good bone and neat feet.  The very best of front assemblies – excellent shoulder and return of upper arm with good prosternum.  Deep chested, excellent spring of rib and well ribbed back.  Strong through loin.  Good width to hindquarters. In top class order and the best of muscle throughout.  His powerful, positive movement was an absolute pleasure to watch.  Delighted to be able to ‘eat my early words’ and award him the CC today.

2nd: KENNEDY Mr B Ir Sh Ch Glennara Coer de Lion JW  I have placed this dog highly in another country before, but today I felt he was giving a lot away on maturity and overall finish to the final Open Dog picture.  I’m sure he will develop into a good example but he is slightly over 2 years old and needs a bit more time to mature. I look forward to the final mature dog!  A very nice type and good overall quality as always from this breeder.  Pleasing in head with good eye colour and shape, and plenty of work throughout. Good ear set and length.  Strong neck into good topline and tailset.  Not so good in front as 1 but still scoring highly in this department.  Strong well muscled hindquarters with good bend of stifle.  Deep chested, strong in loin.  Good bone, neat feet.  Free flowing easy gait and put down in excellent order. This novice handler is really getting to grips with his charge and I’m sure they will be a formidable team.

3rd: DAVIE Mrs M B Lochfrae Ralph Lauren JW Sh.CM

MPB (7 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: MUIR Mrs L Romarne Savannah What a little poppet!  Knows her job so well already.  Not a big one, but so well put together.  Lovely type with the most expressive eyes of correct colour and shape.  Cleanest finish to foreface with good amount of chiseling throughout.  Lovely skull shape – no exaggeration or coarseness.  Good neck into good front assembly.  Clean through neck and shoulder.  Good topline and tailset.  Good front and rear.  Her movement was positive and true.  Lovely style on the move already.

2nd: SMITH Mrs C Cordarragh Rags To Riches Not just so pretty in head as 1 but really nice body properties.  I liked her length to height proportions and thought her body excellent. Most lovely forehand and excelling in width to first and second thigh and bend of stifle. Would prefer a shade darker in eye but overall a lot to commend this girl – I found her most appealing. A little unsure on the move – she could do well with a little more schooling for both handler and exhibit.

3rd: RANDLE Ms S J Rionore Haunting Moment

1st: MUIR Mrs L Romarne Savannah4ndRANDLE Ms S J Rionore Haunting Moment  Nice body properties and with good overall length to body.  Good width to her hindquarter and has a deep chest and well ribbed back.  Good bone, neat tight feet.  Pleasing in head with a dark eye and lovely soft expression.  Good stop and raised brow.  She is just so very raw at the moment and is giving so much away to the more mature girls in her class.3rd:

Close decisions between the winners

.1st: CATLING Mrs P A M Shandwick Star Shine at Teleri. I see her sire is my RCC winner, his stamp is there and this strong bitch line has worked well with him to produce this  most appealing young lady , oozing quality from the tip of her nose to her tail.  She should go far.  I thought her most lovely with the very best of body properties both in front and in rear.  Strong throughout but never loosing that lovely raciness. Very pleasing in head with good eye and correct ear set, length and carriage.  Good amount of stop and lovely raised brows.  Clean finish to foreface. Excellent quality bone and feet.  Deep chested and good overall in rib.  Her outline is lovely and she commands your attention.  Moved well – I will watch her with much admiration and interest.

2nd POLLARD Mrs P M Grayrigge Rosalind    Another very lovely headed bitch, strong in body properties and with good angulation in front, deep chest and nicely ribbed back to a strong  firm loin. Clean through neck and shoulder.  Excellent bone and neat tight feet.  Just giving a little away on hindquarters to the winner at this stage in her development.  Good head and kind dark eye, with good amount of work – lovely soft expression.3rd: GISBY, Mrs T & GISBY Miss G Suteresett Black Magic

 YB (9 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: BELL, Mr D & BARKER-BELL Mrs G Avonfarm Balintyne on Broadway (Imp)A very honest bitch with lovely body properties who moved well and effortlessly covered the ground.  Her headpiece is not for me but she does possess a good eye with correct colour and shape and her backskull is correct and of the right shape.  A little plain in foreface and could do with more brow and stop.  Her angulations are most lovely and she stands over plenty of ground.  She is deep chested and with lovely length to her ribs.  Good bone, neat feet. Lovely topline and tailset.  Moved and presented well.

2ndHEPPELL Mrs Deevonville Santa Lucia JW  A very decent bitch with good outline.  Good angulation in front.  Deep chested, good ribcage and strong powerful wide quarters. Good bone and feet. Moved with great enthusiasm. Presented and handled well.

3rd: ROWE Miss D Gracewood Fair Isle

PGB (14 Entries) Abs: 3

Really liked those who attained a place card in this class but tough decisions have to be made.  Judging is on the day and on another day I would  be happy to have given any of these bitches a first place card.

1st: PRICE Mrs W M Severnvale High Class Babe JW The first three words from my notes about this bitch are – elegant, racy and sound.  I think this sums her up. Yes she could do with a bit more furnishings however coat is the icing on the cake as they say and construction and soundness are paramount for me.  She excels in overall confirmation with her excellent angulation fore and aft.  She is unbroken in topline through to her tailset and has the correct gently slope.  Good skull shape and good amount of work through her foreface.  Good stop and raised brows.  Good ear set and length.  Quality bone and neat tight feet.  Her footfalls were nigh on perfect.

2nd.  Butler-Holleys SHANDWICK INSPIRATION.  Most lovely girl to go over and has a lovely headpiece to go with her quality body properties.  She was rather spoiled with the windy tent we were in and perhaps she just lost her confidence on the move but one must make decisions.  Her head is most lovely with a gorgeous eye and expression, preferred it to 1.  Good colour and shape and lovely brow and stop.  Excellent chiseling through foreface and clean in muzzle.  Good neck into shoulder and decent return of upper arm.  Deep in chest and good ribcage in length, spring and depth.  Strong hindquarter with good amount of first and second thighs.  Good bone and feet. Sympathetically handled.

3rd:  WATERTON Lynwood Kissed by an Angel at Sandstream JW Another quality exhibit from this breeder who was put down in excellent order.  Most lovely head with no exaggeration, clean in foreface, good dark eye of correct shape.  Lovely body properties all through.

LB (8 Entries) Abs: 4

Again all prize card winners were of excellent quality – this is a strong position for the breed with some lovely bitches out there for breeders to work with. CC winner and BOB and gaining her title in the process I was told.

1st: NAYLOR, Mr & MORRISON Miss Anlory Carmenere JW In this class 2nd was more my type of bitch but this bitch just could not be denied.  She commanded attention and her movement was delightful. Excellent construction throughout with the most lovely front assembly.  Balanced all through with strength coupled with elegance and raciness. Pleasing headpiece with good amount of stop and raised brow.  Good skull shape and lovely finish to foreface.  Good eye with correct shape. Her topline just flows and she is unbroken right through to her correct croup which is of good length and set.  Deep chested and strong in rib.  Strong loin and the most powerful rear end.  Excellent width to her first and second thighs with really good musculature all through her body.  She is moderate throughout – as our standard asks for but is teamed with that extra quality and attitude on the move which commands attention.  Her movement was powerful and strong, free flowing and effortless.  Her handler is a little tense with her at times and when they relax together she really seems to enjoy it, wagging her tail as she goes.  She really pushed the dog hard to take BOB and with two top quality moving setters it was a pleasure to watch them.

2nd: GARDNER Mrs E Carnbargus Contemplation JW I have previously done this bitch well and still admire her although today she was not quite on her game. Very much my style of setter with the most gorgeous head and kind dark eye.  She has a lovely expression and very Irish in her naughtiness – this time unfortunately!  Lovely front assembly which is so evident when she reaches for the ground in front on the move,  Exellent bone and the very best of feet.  Deep chested, strong in rib and excellent length of loin.  Strong quarters and correct amount of angulation behind.  Stands over plenty of ground.  A quality girl -  elegant and racy and very much from the top drawer.

3rdHALL Mrs K A Glennara Lehana JW Sh.CM  I feel compelled to say how much this girl appealed.  Most beautiful head with the most gorgeous eye and expression.  The most lovely type as always from this breeder – excels in hindquarters.  Lovely in outline, good bone and feet.  Deep chested and good ribs.  Lost out to 2 on return of upper arm but I found her quite delightful.  Her headpiece is just devine.

 OB (8 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: WATT Mr J Sh Ch Shenanagin Shooting Star RCC A very worthy champion who has so much to like. So appealing in outline with no exaggeration and clean flowing lines all through. Pleasing head with kind dark eye of good shape, good pigmentation.  Good finish to her foreface and plenty of work throughout.  Clean neck into shoulder.  Lovely topline and tailset with excellent rear quarters and croup.  So strong over rear end and with the correct set of pelvis – neither too low or indeed too high which gives that English settery look.  Good layback of shoulder and excellent in prosternum.  Good bone and neat tight feet.  Deep through rib and well ribbed back to strong loin. Presented today in full coat and is another that pleased me immensely when I laid hands on her.

2nd: GISBY Mrs T Balbriggan Ace Of Hearts By Suteresett  Have admired her before and find her head most exquisite.  Dark kind eye with lovely soft expression and good pigmentation.  Excellent skull shape and finish to foreface with good chiseling all through.  Lovely planes to her headpiece with nothing overdone.  Good length of neck into a tidy front.  Deep strong ribcage carried well back to strong muscular loin.  Good width to quarters and good bend of stifle.  Clean in outline and presented immaculately. She definitely made an impression.3rd: DUIJNKERKE Mrs W A Ch Montefigueiras Carmen Del Rio Y Ole

Show Champions, Junior Warrants and Sh.CM Awards

If your dog has any of the above titles and  is not currently included on our Photo Archive for any of the above awards please send us a photo and details to add to the galleries

Note..
If you want all the Open Show Results on this website please send them plus any photos .
It doesn't matter whether you were the judge or an exhibitor so long as we receive them.
Even if you only have the Best of Breed and Best Puppy results it is still interesting for everyone else
Thank you
