DOGS

A very enjoyable dinner the night before started off a good day. The Committee were very welcoming and couldn't have done more and Lynn and Martin,my 2 stewards, kept the ring running smoothly and I thank them for it. I would also like to thank the exhibitors for their entries and for providing me with some hairsplitting decisions. I was enormously pleased with my winning line-up of dogs. BIS was Mugford's Copper's Undercover at Lynwood. RBIS was Edden and Crocker's Meadway Morrisey, BOS was Chorley's Outfoxed by Kerryfair, BPIS was Gisby and Pike's Suteresett Milky Way with Scarletti and BVIS was Vallance's Braidmount Georgie Girl.

MINOR PUPPY DOG (10,2)

1. Sturrock's FORFARIAN CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. Adorable baby of beautiful type. Lovely head, long and lean, such sweet eyes. Clean in neck and shoulders with a firm topline and good tailset. Excellent sternum. Neatest elbows. Stood on firm limbs and moved with style. Textured coat coming. A real poppet.

2. Gratton's BARDONHILL FLOATING MOON INTO GLENLAINE. Taller baby, racy and elegant. Sweetest head. Has reach of neck with neat shoulders sloping topline to a good croup. Wide quarters, neat hocks. Promising.

3. Sheldon's BALINTYNE FOREIGN INTRIGUE AT DELSANTO. Quality typey baby. Another with a lovely head, long ears low and well set. Tall, elegant and rangier so needs to tighten all through. Would have preferred neater elbows.

PUPPY DOG (12,2)

1. Gisby & Pike's SUTERESETT MILKY WAY WITH SCARLETTI. What a fabulous dog puppy! Head to die for. Delicately chiseled under his

dark, expressive eyes. Lovely muzzle and the biggest nose. Ears long, hanging in a neat fold. Neck strong, shoulders fine at the points. His conformation hard to fault. Add to that a fabulous dark coat of beautiful texture and his ring presence and you have a very exciting youngster. Lovely on the move. BP Dog and BPIS.

2. Pullen & Atkin's HARVANCOURT HARLEM AT JACINGAIL. Another lovely puppy of great type. Stronger in body but with the same style as the winner. Beautiful in head and again expressive in eye. Deep body, clean, well laid shoulders and great sternum. Wide, well muscled upper thigh. Could do with losing a bit of weight, but that didn't detract. Coat thick of lovely texture. Great little mover, especially round the ring.

3. Stubbs' RIVERBRUE ZEUS. Another lovely boy of different type. Great depth all through, strong, workmanlike and masculine yet refined. Good bone and feet. Wide and well muscled in upper thigh. Would prefer a better tailset. Gave his handler a hard time standing but came to life on the moved and used his quarters well.

VETERAN DOG (5,1)

They do say the oldies can show the youngsters how to move and this is so true!!!! Irish Setters are such lasters. Thank you for the pleasure.

1. Sturrock's FORFARIAN SORCERER. Showing grey now but this just adds to the appeal. His head is fine, his eyes melting, his nature shining through. Not a big dog but racy with a long neck, clean shoulders and lovely sternum. Great depth, long ribs and firm loin. Super croup and tailset. Not a hair out of place. Demolished the opposition with his driving movement and great carriage.

2. Edwards' BARLEYDALE LUMIERE. Deeper in head than the winner and not the shoulders but nice in foreface with neat muzzle. Has style and balance with good ribs, strong loin, great croup and quarters. In beautiful lush coat and body condition. Moved well.

3. Davies' LOCHFRAE RALPH LAUREN JW. Bigger and longer than 1st and 2nd and a very upstanding dog of lovely type. Beautiful head, long ears and neat skull. Elegant. Strong topline croup and quarters. Not the forechest of the winners nor the muscle but went well nevertheless.

JUNIOR DOG (16,2)

Good class of promising youngsters in many stages of maturity.

1. McLarnon's GLENAVNA JOURNEY SOUTH. Gorgeous youngster. Loved him for his ruggedness. So typey, oozes quality. Glorious head, delicately chiseled. Muzzle long, fine and finished on the square. Neck arched going into fine shoulders, well laid. Firm topline, everything in place. Long and strong from hip to hock and hocks strong and well boned, not skinny like some. Striding action with good reach for and aft. Coat of good texture. Loved him.

2. Lauwers' THENDARA FROZEN ASSET. Very eye catching, stylish youngster with sparkle and attitude. Handsome head but not the soft eye or expression of the winner. Good neck and very clean over the shoulder. Has lost his body, as many boys do at this age, and would prefer more sternum. Lovely hindquarters, well bent with strong hocks though found his croup a bit short and steep for my taste. Nevertheless a super mover with lovely carriage. Fabulous coat with great colour and depth.

3. Hogarth's AVACET SNOWDRIFT. Completed a trio of handsome youngsters. Lovely head, well moulded and beautifully balanced. Soft, gentle eye. Elegant in neck with the best forehand of the three. Great sternum, long, fine shoulder blade and super upper arm. Ribs deep and finished well back. In good hard condition. Well presented. Needs to concentrate more on the move, every slightest noise distracting him. So frustrating.

YEARLING DOG (9,

1. Mugford's COPPER'S UNDERCOVER AT LYNWOOD. My star. Magic young dog, not a big one but has the presence to draw your eye to him and keep it there. Night Fever had that power and he was not a big dog either. Fine in head but with work under the eye, the eye itself a perfect almond with great mascara. Neck strong, fitting perfectly into his shoulders. His topline slopes gently to his very good croup and his hindquarters are long to the hock and well muscled. Absolutely comes to life on the move. Sound with reach and drive. His beautiful coat and condition finishing the perfect picture. Dog CC and BIS.

2. Butler's TIFOSI MASTERPIECE OF SHANDWICK. Lovely, typey youngster. Dark coated, handsome and full of himself. Good head, well balanced and masculine. Neck strong set well into clean shoulders. Firm topline and good depth. Hindquarters well muscled Happy mover, his lashing tail lovely to see.

3. Walter's DENIEL BREAKFAST IN BED. Again, not a big boy and not as mature as 1st & 2nd. Smoother coat but dark and in good condition though not the feathering. Finer in bone but has good ribs and a strong loin with well muscled hindquarters. Sweet head with those melting eyes again. Easy mover on a long stride carrying himself well.

MAIDEN DOG (13,0)

1. Hogarth's AVACET SNOWDRIFT.

2. Ashley-Turner's REDDINS FORAGER. 4th in a strong Junior Class. Tall, racy and elegant youngster, has quality. Waiting for his body to catch up. Sweet head, again, with that wistful expression. Lovely neck, long, sloping shoulders, fine at the points with good upper arm and neat elbows. Stands on tight feet. Long in hindquarters but needs to drop. Good mover. You have to wait longer for dogs of his style and make but it is all the sweeter when it comes.

3. Greenan's ANLORY THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OVER JULESET. Workmanlike youngster, not the scope of the 1st & 2nd but has a good topline, a clean shoulder and a well made front with sternum and neat elbows. Good ribs and loin. Would prefer more length to his neck and a better finish to his foreface. Is a very good mover, as are most from this breeder.

NOVICE DOG (13,0)

1. Lauwer's THENDARA FROZEN ASSET
2. Hogarth's AVACET SNOWDRIFT
3. Ashley-Turner's REDDINS FORAGER

UNDERGRADUATE DOG (9,1)

1. Lauwers' THENDARA FROZEN ASSET

2. Walters' DENIEL BREAKFAST IN BED

3. Needs' DANCET THE BOYFRIEND. Lovely type elegant with a good forehand. Deep rib and a strong loin. Would prefer him longer in the back and with a better tailset but has width to his hindquarters. Coat of nice colour and texture. Moved ok.

GRADUATE DOG (8,2)

1. Edden & Crocker's MEADWAY MORRISEY. The 2nd star of my day, matching the CC winner all the way for type, style, size and quality. Has the same presence and attitude. Again, a lovely head, looks at you mischievously and with disdain. Beautiful dog to go over, everything absolutely fits and flows from his great forehand, his elbows, so neat, his well sprung ribs and good quarters. Lovely topline and tailset. His attitude spills into his movement which is sound, covering the ground with ease. Coat, deep, dark with texture and movement. For me a very exciting youngster and, like the CC winner, holds such promise for the future. RCC and RBIS.

2. Gardner's RIQITTA AUTHENTIC. Handsome dog of lovely type and presence, always a favourite. Has quality from his beautiful head with lovely balance to his very good croup and tailset. Stands out for his depth and substance. His forehand complimenting his quarters perfectly. Lovely topline and shoulders. Beautifully presented as always though have seen him in heavier coat. Matched the winner well going round the ring but on the day moved a little close behind.

3. Murrey-Hogsflesh' SERRULA CHERRY FIZZ CLANNAD. Honest dog of good type with no exaggerations Refined in head and well bodied. Would prefer more length in neck and better finish to his croup. Moved ok.

POSTGRADUATE DOG (15,3)

1. Hunter & Brown's SHENANAGIN SCHOLAR WITH BRAIDMOUNT. Very handsome young man, elegant and rangy. Gorgeous type, such scope and style. Manly head, sweet and gentle in expression. Beautiful neck, long but muscular. The cleanest of shoulders. Super topline firm and strong with lovely croup and tailset. Has sternum. Long from hip to his well defined hocks. Is maturing slowly, like good wine. In beautiful coat and well presented as usual. Moved on a long stride, very pleasing to see.

2. Needs' COVARNEY MOCHA. Beautifully put together balanced and typey. Lovely head. Liked his elegance and substance. No exaggerations on this boy. Everything about him neat and clean. Great forehand, smooth over the shoulder and good ribs. Presentation excellent. Moved well 3. Condron's COVARNEY MASTERCLASS. Great little dog, full of himself. Dark and delicious and hard to handle. His sweet expression belies his mischievous nature. Beautiful front with a great sternum. Has fabulous ribs and an uninterrupted topline to his tailset. Very well defined stifles and neat hocks. Moved with workmanlike precision. Reminded me of the dogs I started off with. Oh happy days!!

MID LIMIT DOG (7,1)

1. Cuddy's BALBRIGGAN ROYAL REBEL. Most beautiful head on this classy dog. Expression melting and wistful. Loved his refined muzzle. Racy and stylish in make and shape with good length to his back. Best of fronts, good ribs, gentle sloping topline with good tailset. Lovely bone. Super coat and condition. Moved well but a real fidget standing. His quality and type won through. Found him irresistible.

2. Croswell's GWENDARIFF MR NOTICEME. Smaller dog of completely different type. Would prefer him longer in the back and better in tailset. Deeper in head than the 1st but refined in skull and foreface. Better to go over then I thought he would be as is finer under that coat. Good ribs and stifle. Neat hocks. Good stride on this dog.

3. Powis' AMBERWAVE BREEZER. Big boy standing over plenty of ground. Long and lean in head and elegant in neck. Clean shoulder and firm topline. Lovely coat. Well off for bone, good hocks. Easy mover in profile and sound in front.

LIMIT DOG (8,1)

1. Pullen & Atkin's SHANOAH JUMP TO IT. Loved the type. Upstanding and well made. Clean in shape, no exaggerations. Masculine head with good foreface and finish. Wistful eye. Strong neck and very good shoulders. Loved his long ribs and moulded loin. Muscled hindquarters with well defined hocks. Not the movement of the 2nd but preferred his overall style and balance.

2. Edwards' GWENDARIFF ROCKIN ROBIN. Different type. Deeper headed with defined stop. Long neck, fine over the shoulder though would prefer better lay back. Has sternum and deep ribs. His loin is well arched and his stifle is long and strong with neat hocks. Tail a little low set for me. Wealth of coat, rich in colour and in good condition. Beautifully presented as always. Went very well. Is on 2 ccs and I wish him luck for his third. He is a quality dog and it will come.

3. Hillocks' SPIRIT OF THE SOUTH TO JONOLA. Have done this handsome dog well in the past and still like him for type. Dark coated but not the condition of the 1st and 2nd and starting to show his age. Still has the lovely head and sweet expression. Very pleased with himself and showed it!

OPEN DOG (5,2)

1. McLarnon's ShCh/IrShCh NORTHAMBER JUST CAUSE FOR GLENAVNA. Upstanding and very elegant and not typically his sire. Has very expressive eyes with a hint of mischief. Great length of neck. Pleased he kept the smooth line of his topline down to his powerful hindquarters which are wide and well muscled and long to his hocks. Amazing length of coat, smooth and like silk to the touch. Very good mover, sound and holds himself so well. A very worthy ShCh.

2. Lauwers' ShCh JONOLA DR DOOLITTLE. I cannot pretend that the long white ears on this dog do not detract for me. They alter the proportion and overall balance and make his head and forehand look heavier in profile than it really is. He has a refined skull, good foreface and an elegant neck which get lost in all this. Judicious trimming would greatly improve. On the plus he has a very strong topline and a lovely croup and a nigh on perfect tailset. Not particularly tall on the leg (which is another reason for reducing those ear fringes). He is, however stylish and typey which shows in his movement. Dark coat of good substance.

3. Burke's CLACHNAHAR AMI PIERROT. Lovely head, low set ears and elegant neck give refinement. Clean line to his good tailset and well bent hindquarters complete the overall picture. Would prefer a better upper arm and forechest. Could do with losing a bit of weight to define his loin. Not the movement of 1st or 2nd.

SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG (3.2)

1. Gwilliam and Bozier's MILLCROFT POACHERS MOON. VHC in a very nice Puppy class. Youngster of pleasing type and shape. Well balanced with good angles fore and aft. Lovely topline and tailset. Sweet head and expression. Super coat with movement to it. Moved with style.

2. Baker and Breheny's MANTAFIELD RED DEVIL FOR SAFFRONLYN. Dark coated and tall with an elegant neck. Not the bone or substance if the winner.
