Critique - Judge Dogs. Julie Wilkins
I would like to thank the exhibitors for a most quality entry. I was extremely pleased with my final line up of absolutely superb dogs. They all possessed all the traits and qualities I was looking for in a top class Irish Setter and were all excellent examples of the breed type.
My only criticism would be that judges and ultimately breeders seem to be unable to appreciate correct shoulder angulation so that a good layback of shoulder with return of upper arm is becoming increasingly rare. It is this good front angulation, coupled with correct rear angulation and tailset, that creates the distinctive shape of the Irish with its trademark striking flowing topline. Let us not loose this.
Dogs
Minor Puppy:
1. Gisby & Pike’s Suteresett Milky Way with Scarletti. What a cracker, 6 months on the day. He showed the adults a thing or two about behaviour. His head is scrumptious, long arched neck, best shoulders in class, balanced just right for age, gleaming dark coat, should have a bright future. BPIS
2. McLarnon’s Glenavana Journey South. Well bodied, shorter coupled pup. Nice width of thigh. Pleasing head with low ears. Again lovely dark coat. Moved well
3. Greenan’s Anlory The Living Daylights over Julesett. Completed trio of promising babies. My notes say naughty but nice! Very sound with good topline, good return of upper arm, very dark eye under lovely raised brows.
Puppy:
1. Glenavana Journey South.
2. Wood’s Reddins Falcon Another naughty and exuberant pup enjoying his day out! Good overall shape and topline. Super rear angulation, neat feet.
3. Anlory The Living Daylights over Julesett
Veteran:
1. Laidlaw’s Sh Ch & IR Sh Ch Glencarron Mcduff Sh.C.M. In fabulous condition, not showing his years. Lovely masculine head with neat low ears, strong topline into sturdy hindquarters, good depth of body. BVIS
2. McCulloch’s Cullmadons Celebrity. Beautiful classic head with soft expression. Straight front, longer cast than 1, well bent stifles. Moved soundly with such enthusiasm
3. Crass’ Avontyne Tonights The Night. Similar in shape, sound hindquarters with well bent stifles, just not so good in tailset. Well presented.
Junior:
1. Chorley’s Kerryfair Snowfox Really fell for this young man and seriously considered him for top honours. He won here with ease from his beautiful head, low ears, perfect straight front and balanced shape. Just needs feathering to complete the picture.
2. Danks-Kemish’s Sametsuz On Cue Alolfran. Excellent presentation, very glamorous dog in full coat. Excellent reach of neck, straight front, flowing hindquarters. Not the body depth of 1.
3. Naylor’s Davsett Babarossa. Heavier type, well bodied with good depth, so sound on the move, would just prefer a finer head.
Yearling:
1. Withey’s Bridgella’s Northern Lights. New one to me. Loved his type, soft expression, strong front, neat topline into good tailset, animated on the move.
2. Gardner’s Riqitta Authentic. On first impressions thought he would be my class winner especially having admired him from the ringside previously, but not giving his best today pulling back into his shoulders and loosing his shape slightly so had to give way to 1. Love his type and balance, nice body length and depth, straight hocks
3. Davie’s Lochfrae Aviator. Streamlined dog with long neck, flowing topline and sweeping stifles. Good head, raised brows and wide nostrils.
Maiden:
1. Davsett Babarossa
2. Tuite’s Porschett Paterson Just 12 months and still raw. Refined head with dark pigment and neat folding ears
3. Pallister’s Penwyn American Boy, racy shape with clean topline from arched neck
Novice:
1. Bridgella’s Northern Lights
2. Sametsuz On Cue Alolfran.
3. Davsett Babarossa
Under Grad:
1. Bott’s Bardonhill Grinning Bear. My notes just say wow, surprised to see him in this class! Chunky boy, well boned, excellent depth through body and hindquarters. Love his topline and tailset
2. Sametsuz On Cue Alolfran
3. Lochfrae Aviator
Graduate:
1. Selman’s Cymbeline Dara O’Mally, nice flowing lines, well muscled which showed on the move, just needs to strengthen in front.
Post Grad:
1. Cuddy’s Balbriggan Royal Rebel JW. One whose praises I have sung before and I still find him appealing. His head is so soft and melting in expression, straight front with strong pasterns and tight feet, super topline and so well balanced. Just love the body shape made from well angulated construction. Steady and positive on the move. Res CC
2. Naylor & Morrison’s Anlory Bonarda JW Lots to like about this young lad. Just lacking in maturity to 1, but his time will come. Good head with lovely eye shape. Strong front on thick padded feet, nicely balanced body proportions. His movement is absolutely superb
3. Bott’s Bardonhill Storm Moon. Another cracking dog from this kennel, of wonderful type and shape excelling in angulation, just not as positive on the move which cost him today.
Mid Limit:
1. Bott’s Bardonhill Ginger-Whinger. My star of the day. Wish he was mine! He has the most wonderful Irish character, mischievous and will do exactly as he pleases, love it! I would hate to loose this in favour of show robots. Not a big dog but so beautifully balanced with good body length and excellent angulation fore and aft creating that wonderful stunning topline from the tip of his nose to the tip of tail without a single lump or bump. His head is gorgeous with desired chiselling, dark eye and long low set ears. His effortless free striding movement is a joy to watch, even in this difficult venue he flowed around the ring holding his topline. Honoured to award him his second CC. Please to see he awarded BIS on the referee’s decision.
2. Crocker & Hammick’s Riverbrue Dionysus JW, last time awarded him best puppy dog and still find him impressive as a mature adult, although behaving like a puppy today! Immaculately presented in gleaming coat. Racy outline, well ribbed back with strong loin and powerful hindquarters.
Limit:
1. Burke’s Clachnahar Ami Pierrot JW. A dog I have long admired. He has the most exquisite head. Super body proportions, great depth, plenty of chest room, muscular neck, flowing sloping topline, moved with playfulness. In the challenge seemed to drop down on his hindquarters spoiling his shape slightly which cost him when splitting hairs between the fabulous dogs in the line up.
2. Sturrock’s Forfarian Goodfella. Awarded him post grad class last time, looks even better now for carrying less weight. Masculine head, shorter coupled body with straight front, super outline, well angulated with powerful hindquarters. Most beautiful profuse coat. Love his character, unlucky to meet 1.
3. Naylor & Morrison’s Bardonhill Bardolino by Anlory JW . A real rugged type of setter presenting a streamline shape with good angulation and stunning topline. Litter brother to CC winner and of similar stamp, just not as refined in head.
Open:
1. McLarnon’s Sh Ch & IR Sh Ch Northamber Just Cause for Glenavana . So pleased to have the opportunity to go over this wonderful champion and was not disappointed. Love his extremely rich dark gleaming coat. So racy and glamorous in profile. Quality dog built on flowing lines and standing on neat feet. Best head in the class. Thought he might have been my CC winner but unfortunately he’d had enough in the challenge and gave up.
2. Holehan & North’s Sh Ch Erinade Starwars JW. Another worthy champion, a real honest type of setter, not as rangy as 1 but so sound which shows on the move. Just preferred the topline of 1.
3. Rowan’s Lochfrae Archimedes. Lovely head and expression, like his shape and topline into good tailset with excellent depth to hindquarters.
Sp Beginer:
1. Riqitta Authentic
2. Ross’ Drumwhaur Rob Roy. 5th in a strong post grad class. Scores in topline, pleasing head, short in hock. To be crticial would like his feet trimmed tighter.
3. Deighton’s Ballintyne Once in a While. Nice type of setter with classic head, good front, strong backline.
